MB Video Game Classics: Donkey Kong Country

It's Sunday. I've decided I'll either post threads on Sunday or Monday. Doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. Anyway. Vote!

Chula Vista 06-24-2018 02:17 PM

Owned and played it before Sherri was born. A CLASSIC!

The Batlord 06-24-2018 02:22 PM

Wasn't she born in the 80s?

MicShazam 06-24-2018 02:30 PM

Never really played most Nintendo games since I never had one of those consoles. Even as a kid, all the other kids I knew either had Sega machines, Amiga 500's or Commodore 64 computers.

1983. The original DK came out in 81.

Indeed. Definitely one of the best games to come out back in the day, and could easily still hold up as a solid platformer today.

5/5 except for when the birds call you a spic when you jump on their head.

Key 06-24-2018 10:57 PM

Nice to see consistency in the votes for this one. It is indeed a true classic.

Dude111 06-25-2018 12:35 AM

I havent ever played this but if its like Donkey kong (Which I love),I know its good!

What an informed opinion.

Akai 06-25-2018 02:06 AM

Not even Dwn could give this one a vote less than 5/5.

It's nothing like Donkey Kong. Bro if you don't even know what Donkey Kong Country is then you don't have any business having opinions on post-80s games. You're simply too ignorant.

YorkeDaddy 06-25-2018 08:44 AM

DKC2 is superior but this still gets a 5 from me

Dude111 06-25-2018 09:14 AM

Im sorry Batlord..... I guess it isnt as good as donkey kong??

Im sorry dues :)

You can't say whether or not it is unless you play it.

Dude111 06-26-2018 04:51 AM

Yea I suppose your right :)

MicShazam 06-26-2018 05:07 AM

Man, that "games I should play but haven't" list is too long for one lifetime.

Oriphiel 06-26-2018 07:00 AM

The og DKC trilogy are the kind of games that I'll play anytime, anywhere, with anyone. Tight controls, great graphics, fun level designs, awesome music, and a barrelful of charm. 10/10

Hit boxes are more ****ed than you remember. Or maybe it's cause we're playing on that new mini Super Nintendo that keeps all the games on it digitally.

Hit boxes aren't the kind of thing an emulator will screw up, so if they're ****ed when you're playing the game now, they were always ****ed.

Just replayed and beat all three games on the SNES like a month ago, and didn't have any issues. Hitboxes were fine. Rare was actually pretty lenient with them, and let players get away with minor brush ups against bad guys. Time your jumps so that you land on the enemy's head, not their face, always hold down the roll button to sprint (especially when you're flying around in the parrot stages), and keep on flexing against K. Rool.

The hitboxes are excellent in those games. I replay at least DKC2 yearly and it holds up as well as any 20+ year old game you will find

Lucem Ferre 06-30-2018 05:27 AM

Like I said though, we aren't playing it from cartridge. For us it's either been really forgiving or really brutal. It's usually the birds though. Like a little pixel of wing would pop up from under a ledge and kill you. Much worse for Donkey Kong than for Diddy though.

The Batlord 06-30-2018 10:15 AM

I wish it hadn't been over two decades since I played a DKC game or else I'd have something to actually say. I can't even vote cause I don't remember how much I liked it.

Lucem Ferre 06-30-2018 10:18 AM

Every time I get that mini game where you have to spell Kong with the barrels I always accidentally spell koon.

The Batlord 06-30-2018 10:30 AM

Making monkeys spell "koon" is ****ed up.

I can guarantee you probably enjoyed it. DKC was seriously fantastic for its time.

The Batlord 06-30-2018 10:55 AM

I know full well I liked it or I wouldn't have played so much of the first two and I'm pretty sure some of the third. I do not have vivid memories of the games at this point but I'm sure if I played them I'd start getting hardcore flashbacks.

Key 06-30-2018 11:00 AM

I imagine so. I haven't played it in so long but I wouldn't give up the opportunity to play it again.

The Batlord 06-30-2018 11:04 AM

I just wish I hadn't lost my platformer mojo with age. That **** is hard now.

Key 06-30-2018 11:32 AM

I've found some difficulty with modern day platformers but I honestly think I'd have more trouble with older ones. I'm so used to platformer games now just having very tight and precise controls. It'd be extremely difficult to go back to clunky controls.

You can totally get it back - simply by playing more games like that.
I thought I was rusty at action games too, but then earlier this year, I started playing arcade shoot 'em ups again. A lot. After a while, I started beating all of my old high-scores. So much for getting rusty with age - and I'm older than you.

I'm sure my reaction time will get worse with age, but right now, it's good enough. Just gotta get those routines into your fingers again.

Oriphiel 06-30-2018 05:55 PM

Just bought Donkey Kong Country Returns and No More Heroes. Verily, twill be a good night.
