Favorite Video Game Cutscenes
One thing I both don't see a lot of people talk about and simultaneously rip on games for doing this are the cutscenes. Some games have some absolutely fantastic cutscenes and often times they tend to help the story develop and increase your chances of really diving into the game. I'm not the most humongous fan of cutscenes in games but i do love them when they allow the story grow more and more. And one that I will always turn back to is the fall of Arthas in Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos / The Frozen Throne:
It not only showcases the fall of Arthas, but gives you something to look forward to in terms of the story. At this point, the game grows pretty dark. I love it. But, I'll also mention this one as well for kicks: ^Classic cutscene if I've ever seen one. |
Video game cutscenes are evil and antithetical to what I want games to be.

One of my new favs from Batman Arkham Origins. Copperhead is just so visually interesting to watch move. The cutscene is only a minute-and-a-half at the start but the only video with just the cutscene has meh quality.

I ****ing LOVE video games without cutscenes!:love::love::love::love::love::love: (and games with infrequent, short and easily skippable cutscenes get a hug too) |

^both fantastic pics. Especially the Kakariko Village one. I still remember the first time I ever became an adult in Ocarina of Time and walking out to the market for the first time as an adult was ****ing terrifying. Those re-deads will always be scary.

Being mainly a fan of old school FPS games and 90's/2000's platformers, there's not really a whole lot of cutscenes that I can think of to write home about.
This is the best cutscene of all time though, and I'm sure windsock will agree with me: Some of the cutscenes in the Gex series are on a "so bad it's good" level, where it's just so stupid that you can't help but love it in some sense. Oh, same with Road Rash. Favorite racing game, favorite cheesy cutscenes. |
Most of my favorites contain spoilers so I’m not sure I wanna post them

Greatest voice acting of all time:

^Kreia tho. From Kotor II. Talk about amazing voice actors.

Give me games with story, with cutscenes that advance the story, or leave the cutscenes out of it. A lot of cheaper games have "flavor" cutscenes that don't add anything to the story, while some more high-quality games have extended cutscenes that explain huge chunks of story. The former is merely irritating, but during the latter, I'll get up from my computer and go make a sandwich or something.
Keep cutscenes concise, keep the action moving, and include an option to skip the cutscene, for the love of God. |
JRPGs are the worst for that. They'll go into a long cut scene, end the cut scene, then you'll walk literally five steps, and then they hit you with another cut scene. Then when you think that cut scene is over it turns out it was only the first chapter of the cut scene.

I mean yeah but if it's a a 6-7/10 game that you're enjoying but not over the moon about those cut scenes can drop it right to a 5 in five minutes. There's simply no gaining back that trust once you realize this is probably going to be par for the course.

Long cutscenes are annoying. Cutscenes that add to a story like Frozen Throne are amazing. I like to feel immersed in the story but if it's based mostly on cutscenes, its not fun. I'd watch a movie I wanted to watch tons of cutscenes.

Video game cut scenes of just people standing around talking are really my only major gripe with all non-TV episode-length cut scenes. Do something with that ****. Show me something cool that wouldn't be possible with in-game graphics. Even the Arkham games do the standing around exposition thing at times and it's NAGL.
|
I agree with that as well.

A great exampe of a cutscene that really has nothing to do with the overall plot but still serves a purpose and is a joy to experience. Games can get away with something like this when they’ve done the work to establish their characters and world and made you care about it all. Not many games have ever pulled it off but The Last of Us is certainly one of them |
I need to play The Last of Us

And they actually made a child character you gave a **** about. I wish Ellie were my little sister so she could teach me how to be cool and talk to chicks.

Loads of cut scenes from Metal Gear. |
Make characters do awesome action stuff in your cut scenes and I just might want to kill you. It's a game. Let me play the awesome action stuff, damn it! What's wrong with game designers these days.
|
I'm ok with cut scenes if they're rare. Like one short, flashy cut scene after a lengthy mission. I don't like being interrupted all the time - that's what gets under my skin.

An eternally whiny bitch.
|
Yeah, I like not sitting with my hands folded in my lap when I'm playing a game. Weird.
|
I don't go insane after ten seconds of not fingerblasting. Makes all the difference I suppose.
|
I do. Especially considering 99% of all video game cutscenes are pure autism.

Takes one to know one.
