I'm a stubborn **** who dislikes not having complete freedom to decide what to read, so I'm a bit hesitant about joining, but it sounds fun. And your choice of book intrigues me so that's tempting. I think if there's enough interest I'm in.

Exo 03-21-2021 02:06 PM

I've been meaning to read that book, Frown, so I'm in. I'm almost done with my current read too.

Marie Monday 03-21-2021 02:16 PM

yay!

Spoiler alert: if I have to pick a book it won't be Middlemarch lol. I'm not gonna make you commit to a book as long as that

The Batlord 03-21-2021 02:34 PM

Who's up for reading the novelization of Batman Forever?

Marie Monday 03-21-2021 02:58 PM

I guess I'd grudgingly assent if it means you join

Same. Although I am just now finishing a book and have no particular idea about what I want to read next so it's a good moment. Plus, Invisible cities has been on my to read list for almost 10 years now so it might be the right time to dive in (even though I didn't like If on a winter's night...).

My book for the vote is Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino

Sure. Though I'd be hesitant to recommend anything here I'm down with reading anything.

Frownland 03-21-2021 11:07 PM

Awesome. Ideally everyone would put in an option so that we can have a diverse poll to vote on for the first round, but it doesn't have to be a requirement. I can throw in a few extra ones if needed.

So far we have:
Exo
ando here
ya boi

Maybes:
Marie Monday
The Batlord
adidasss

Tristan_Geoff 03-21-2021 11:25 PM

No:
Tristan who can't read

ando here 03-22-2021 12:56 AM

100 Boyfriends by Brontez Purnell is my rec. Give me an excuse to read it. Got a long queue.

Count me in. My vote for the first round goes to invisible cities, since I and a few others want to read it, but my pick for later rounds would be Fathers and Sons by Turgenev (if y'all haven't read it yet)

adidasss 03-22-2021 06:06 AM

^^Yeah I've read that one and didn't like it, but I forget why.

Edit: Recorded my thoughts on it on MB actually, just seemed old fashioned I guess.

Marie Monday 03-22-2021 08:40 AM

Omg fookin fight me, it's magnificent

adidasss 03-22-2021 09:17 AM

Btw, I thought the idea was more to motivate us to read things we haven't yet. You've read it recently or you would read it again because you like it so much?

Marie Monday 03-22-2021 10:29 AM

I read it quite a long time ago so I'd like to read it again at some point, but the main reason I picked it was that I think of it now and then when I'm on MB, what with all the nihilism and all. So I'm curious about MB members' thoughts on it.

Exo 03-22-2021 01:28 PM

I'd like to read Invisible Cities so I'm not going to even rec a book. I thought it was a perfect first book.

jwb 03-23-2021 12:02 AM

why does a book club mean they tell you what book to read?

you go to a strip club there's a variety of strippers

you go to a gay club there's a variety of gays

you go to a book club and they tell you what book to read and then judge the way you interpret it

ando here 03-23-2021 01:43 AM

Except no one here REALLY gives a f***.

Bring on the books!

???

adidasss 03-23-2021 04:54 AM

Yeah, ignoring is the best option with jwb.

Anyway, we agree on Invisible cities as the first choice, I guess we just have to agree on the timeline? I should be able to finish my current book by this weekend, and it seems like a relatively short book so maybe in 3 weeks? I think that's how these things work...

ando here 03-23-2021 05:12 AM

How bout a poll? Just put all the titles mentioned on it and let's do a vote.

Frownland 03-23-2021 06:48 AM

Jwb's just warming up for his airline food jokes.

I'm adding a poll to the thread with everyone's options toward the end of the week. No required timeline for reading, take it at your own rate. Just know that if you take too long you might miss the organic discussion window.

Great, my timeline will be similar. I'll be finished with my current book in a day or two and a copy of Invisible Cities is currently making its way to me through the maze that is the UK's Royal Mail, but hopefully I can start reading this weekend.

Marie Monday 03-26-2021 04:10 PM

My copy of Invisible Cities has arrived early! I'm 2 chapters in and enjoying it massively, I look forward to discussing it

Frownland 03-27-2021 10:53 AM

Since Marie's already started and most people seem on board with Invisible Cities, I think it will be better to use a rotation schedule instead of a voting system. We'll start with Invisible Cities, then after a few weeks or month, we'll move on to the next book in the list.

I'll make a new thread for discussion and add the rotation list to the OP. If you'd like to change or remove your recommendation, let me know.

EDIT: Discussion thread here

That was a good book, learned how to think better. More like a computer, input/output. Went through it and you create small beginner projects in python. Like tic tac toe game, but it gets to creating a bigger more complex projects. If you know how to code already in another language then this goes over ways to automate the boring clicking tasks.

The "Crash Course" for Python is sort of needed to read before you start projects. That starts off with "Hello World", up to creating projects also.

The Batlord 06-15-2021 03:38 PM

Didn't finished that Ayn Rand book, too boring plus I started before the new movie came out for it. Once I saw the movie, didnt finish it.

Cant even remember anything to type about the Ron Paul book, maybe a good thing... https://boxden.com/smilies/tv6aijN.png

Exo 06-15-2021 07:00 PM

F*cking forgot all about this. I'm sorry guys.

Chula Vista 06-15-2021 07:47 PM

I'm in as long as I don't have to write long winded reviews and stuff.
Plus all my book picks will be fiction.

Who do I send the check to?

The Batlord 06-15-2021 08:03 PM

Let's do Fountainhead!
