Retro games

I've been looking for some good arcade games and about 50% of the results I've been getting are retro.

I don't understand the trend. Why would you buy a beast of a machine which can play games with amazing graphics yet you prefer to go for some pixelated thing that looks like it can be played on an Atari from the 80s. What gives?

Also, what are your top retro games so I can see what it's about...?

I'd say Party Hard, Shovel Knight, Stardew Valley, Braid, and Graveyard Keeper are good examples of 2D retro-styled games that are dope to play.

Mechanics shine bright even if the graphics don't necessarily. I also really love the retro graphics style. I know it's being used a lot more these days, especially with indie developers. But if the game is good, I don't mind it. I second both Stardew Valley and Shovel Knight.

I also don't call them "retro games" because that insinuates they are very old. They're more retro styled games.

Well i mean if you didn't grow up in the 80's and 90's you probably wouldn't understand the appeal of retro games. I dunno though, cuz i know some of the younger crowd still has interest in them too which is cool. I don't understand the appeal for modern games for instance. In fact, I stopped liking the style of how games were looking and playing during the early 2000's, the PS2 era. Ever since then I've stuck to retro gaming and still happy with that lol. My cutoff date is about 2002. I'm 38 btw

Retro games are awesome, it's like a completely different appeal just like how some of us listen to 80s and 90s music when we could listen to modern music with more modern equipment that's technically considered to be superior. It doesn't necessarily equate to superior results though, so you have these really awesome platformers that are completely timeless as a result. Admittedly sometimes classic games suck just like with anything else, but the same is true of modern games. There's lots of really cheaply made games that lack any amount of creativity even today with the best software and bigger budgets backing these games.

The last retro style game I really enjoyed was Enter the Gungeon. It's more or less an upgraded Binding of Isac in which you go room to room, shooting at enemies. Every level has a boss and chests with random loot, meaning the game will typically vary quite a bit between plays due to differences in the items you get. So it's a roguelike. It's hard, at least at first, so you play as far as you can get and your efforts unlock more weapons / powerups to make subsequent plays a little easier on average.

Right now I'm playing Moonlighter, another dungeon roguelike. In this game, you man your store at day and then go into dungeons at night to find stuff to sell in your store and get you better gear. It feels clunky compared to Gungeon and is not as fun, but still a very pleasant game that'll easily keep you at it for hours.

Well thanks for the thoughtful reply. I guess it's a matter of personal taste, I was just surprised at how prevalent these types of games were in the arcade subgenre. I could understand there being a few curious but there are dozens of them. Maybe it's also a matter of cost (mostly these games are from independent studios).

Anyway, I'm not attracted to them at all, regardless of the mechanics. I play games (and have specifically bought a PS4) not just for the mechanics but for the graphics also.

I was terrible at video games but I always liked the Link series on Nintendo. I think they may some freeware versions of old Nintendo and Sega games you can play on your computer.
