The Beatles "Get Back" Documentary
 

Anybody watching it? I'm not a big Beatles fan or anything but I find the raw footage to be fascinating. Watching them work out songs and bicker like prissy bitches is immensely entertaining to me for some reason. Also, Yoko is in almost every shot and she's just sitting there being chill as f*ck which really puts a dagger in that whole "Yoko killed the Beatles" myth. Also, Paul is handsome as sh*t with a beard. They're also all very funny. Well, not so much George yet. So far he's just been a whiny baby.

I'm only two hours in. It's long as f*ck.

I don't have Disney Plus so I have to wait until the powers that be decide that everyone has a right to watch it.

Don't get Disney either, but everything I've seen about it has looked interesting.

I subscribed to Disney+ just to watch this. Unfortunately, for lack of time I've only been able to watch in dribs and drabs so far, constantly fast-forwarding. I hope to give the whole thing a proper viewing eventually - it's so long! Can't belleve how beautifully they've restored the film - that in itself is quite an achievement. My favorite scene so far (I believe it's in Part 2): after George "quits" and John is hours late, and Paul and Ringo are sitting with Linda et al. and Paul remarks, "And then there were two" - and the camera stays on his face for a very long period of time as he looks near tears. Very poignant. Paul comes off really well in the film, imo - a well-meaning micromanager, musical director and idea man without whom nothing would've gotten done at that point.

Yeah, does look long. Not a Beatles fan, either, but I'll give it a look. Thanks.

I've heard a lot of the bootlegs from the "Get Back" sessions over the years and I used to be an enormous Beatles fan, but for some reason this documentary hasn't reeled me in yet. I'm sure it has great parts and music, but maybe I spent too much time with the Beatles over the years to spend another 8 hours with them? Maybe I still haven't forgiven Peter Jackson for "The Hobbit?" I don't know. In any case, I have no Disney connection so it's a sort of a moot thing.

I've seen various bits of the new documentary on Youtube and even re-watched the rooftop concert in its entirety. The problem for me is that this is a band who are past their co-operative prime, when, together, they were so inventive. Back in the day, the Beatles made albums on which every track, as George Martin famously insisted, had the quality of a potential single: no fillers.
From what I've seen of the Get Back sessions, it's mostly filler, occasionally rising to a few decent songs being wrung out of a band who at times could barely endure each other's company. How many studio run-throughs of Don't Let Me Down do I want to hear? Having heard the song repeatedly in the 50 years since it was released, the answer to that question is "not many". Same goes for the other songs really.

Tellingly, in the rooftop concert, after about 25 mins they start playing Get Back for the second time: incredibly, The Beatles have become a band who turn up at a gig with insufficient material.

(Sorry, ribbons; perhaps you have more interest in seeing the interplay of the Fab Four and the nuts and bolts of their music-making process than me. I just want that pop-single product! ;))

Honestly, as much as I would like to see the Get Back doc (curse you, Disney), I would have been more interested in going the behind the scenes of Abbey Road, the last time the Beatles recorded as a band. Was it tense? John missed much of the sessions due to a car accident. I saw something in my Facebook feed where John claimed he told the band to come up with the arrangement for Come Together (" we've been together a long time; you know how I want it."). Not very enthusiastic did he seem, yet an incredible song, and album. Anyway, would have been interesting to have seen the interactions there.

^ Yes a behind-the-scenes glimpse of making Sgt. Pepper, Revolver and your very own "Rubber Soul" would be fascinating, though perhaps the word "glimpse" is key. With both films, there are, what?,ten hours of released studio footage of the Get Back sessions. Someone should work out The Renaldo and Clara Equation about fly-on-the wall documentaries:-

Not really a glimpse per se, but a great video of Day in the Life which was filmed in the studio.

Thanks ! That's an interesting clip. It takes me back to a time when I was hungry to see the least little bit of these mega-stars if and when they turned up on tv. Maybe it was because no internet or an early-teens obsession, but that was how I could sit fascinated through Magical Mystery Tour:-
