Free YouTube Movies Worth Watching

Must say, they're getting better with their picks. So I thought I'd start a thread to herald some of the better ones. My tastes do err toward the classics. If you discover a good freebie of whatever stripe streaming there please share! Keep in mind that the window for most of these streamers is about a month - so don't wait too long to check out a favorite.

Tonight's pick (just added today) -

https://www.filmsite.org/posters/manchuriancan3.jpg

the manchurian candidate (1962, john frankenheimer)

An American POW in the Korean War is brainwashed as an unwitting assassin for an international Communist conspiracy.
Bizarre and prescient, American power politics on the big screen has seldom been this fun to watch. And everyone from Spike Lee to Ridley Scott has quoted from the frames of Frankenheimer's vision.

Is there a section that tells you how to find these free movies? I err towards the classics as well.

Yep. But I swear they don't list em all. Seem to always find the good ones by association (or accident).

O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000, Joel & Ethan Coen)

In the deep south during the 1930s, three escaped convicts search for hidden treasure while a relentless lawman pursues them.

One of my all time faves despite events wrapping up too neatly. Bonafide 21st Century classic in my book, though.

Yeah, been meaning to watch Sound City but the Muscle Shoals doc is a classic. I mean, Jesus, I’d LOVE to visit and record a session of anything just to say I experienced firsthand the magic that made those great Rolling Stone and Aretha Franklin records.

It's amazing how those 2 places were the datum points for rock and roll perfection.

the last detail (1973, hal ashby)

Two Navy lifers are ordered on a last detail before vacation, escorting a young recruit to jail for theft. One of Nicholson’s -and Ashby’s - best (imo) and a lot of ad-lib fun. Not an legal upload so check it out before it’s pulled.

nazarin (1959, luis buñuel)

An unusually compassionate priest in a Mexican village is sent into exile after parishioners frame him. Buñuel is tersely critical of his compatriots here and the moral dialectics are front and center. "The story" is always of little to no importance in his films. One of the heralded members of the early 20th Century Surrealist Group, Buñuel came from a school of art whose aim was to provocate. Great looking print.

the impressionists and the man who made them (2015, phil grasby)

It recounts the efforts of art collector, Paul Durand-Ruel, in acquiring and selling the leading painters of the so-called Impressionist Period. Grasby's at/history films usually have an intriguing angle. This one's no exception.

the killer elite (1975, sam peckinpah)

The original version by one of my favorite filmmakers, though many claim it's one of Peckinpah's lesser efforts. Prime form for James Caan as a mercenary shot by his partner, Robert Duvall, and out for revenge. Worth a once over.

the night of the hunter (1955, charles laughton)

Just added today. Robert Mitchum is scary as ever as the deranged, homicidal preacher.

The Planet of the Apes Franchise on YouTube

I spotted the first three installments (anyway) streaming free on the channel. Looks like they're repeating what they did with the Godzilla movies. Love it. Will definitely watch them in order. Glad I kept my Premium subscription (no ads, though my roomate swears a simple adblocker does the trick - I doubt it).

yup, believe it or not it really is this easy to get rid of Youtube ads. I prefer uBlock Origin, but either work.

The Batlord 02-01-2022 07:20 PM

I don't care how old you are. You are the platonic ideal of a boomer.

ando here 02-01-2022 07:25 PM

And I don't care how dumb you are. You're ****ing up the thread with stupid posts.

assault on precinct 13 (1976, john carpenter)

The first version. Early, but classic Carpenter.

woop there's a channel that has uploaded a whole bunch of Tarkovsky and other Russian classics on youtube

Still Guy Ritchie's best film (even though Rock'n'Rolla gives it a run for it's money), and somehow, it's still available on YouTube in its entirety after being online for 5 years.

Yes! It's the official channel of the main Soviet film studio, MosFilm (the short for Moscow Film, you see). Have lots of happy memories tied to this logo

It has The Mirror, which has one of my favorite screen beauties, the great Margarita Terekhova. There's a scene where some random guy comes on to her and while he fails I don't think his game is half bad. If you're not afraid to sound weird in just the right way, you open the door for her to tease you and then you're in.

I love the Mirror. I've mentioned it here before but it left such a strong impression that I had an incredibly vivid nightmare the night after I watched it

If you can find that thread I’d love to read it.

Isn’t Terekhova just amazing? The scene at the printing house, where she gets paranoid over a typo is one of my all time faves. When her colleague suddenly explodes at her after they all escape a brush with death (people were executed left and right for this kind of thing under Stalin) and accuses her of ruining her marriage by trying to be an “emancipated woman” is an amazing snapshot of the FEAR that was the defining emotion of those years. Her colleagues tell her that she looks like a scarecrow cause she ran in wet from the rain, when she’s looking probably as beautiful as anyone ever has, that’s a real “source for this claim?” moment...

I love it so much when non-Russians love that film.

Mondo Bungle 06-30-2022 06:31 PM

The greatest ever movie is on yt but it's got hardcoded Spanish subtitles so the English ones are above them and I suppose that's whack. Funny I should look it up and find this video when I remember there was in fact a better quality version

Not the case with this one though fortunately

Apparently a bunch of mega dank movies I've watched on yt have been taken down super recently

jadis 06-30-2022 07:07 PM

nevermind wrong thread

I already forgot the nightmare when I first mentioned it (I looked it up, it's in the dreams thread) so there no more information to be found there, unfortunately. I remember the images of the waving bedsheets in the house having something to do with it or something. The scenes with the mother I also remember (who wouldn't?). It's been quite a long time since I've seen it though, I should rewatch it
