Commentary or review, this is definately one of my favorite journal entries.

Anyways I actually rather like this album. It gets a second place medal for biggest grower. Trout Mask Replica getting first place.

Urban Hat€monger ? 07-17-2009 01:07 PM

I'll listen to it again in a decade & see if it's grown on me.

Urban Hat€monger ? 07-17-2009 01:19 PM

It's just occurred to me. I should have made a comment about wanting to go get a curry halfway through the album. :(

Yeah I didn't dig this album the first time I heard it, it really is a grower.

However a repeated lsiten might be too much to ask for poor Urban so let's applaude him for giving his best efforts. :D

But yeah, there's way more inaccessible prog out there, believe me. Ever heard of Henry Cow?

An Open Letter To 'Brenda'

Dear Brenda

Thank you so much for invading my personal space today in the form of asking the local village idiot who masquerades as a local radio DJ to play Achy Breaky Heart by Billy Ray Cyrus. I cannot even begin to express how much sheer loathing and contempt I have for you in mere words alone.
People like you are the reason life isn't as fun as it should be. People like you are the reason Any & Dec have an audience. People like you are the reason more people vote for the X Factor than vote in general elections. People like you are the reason why when the phrase 'the general public' is used it conjures up images in my head of human shaped pink bags filled with excrement being force fed even more shit by people like Louis Walsh & Simon Cowell while they flick through Heat magazine.
In short you are an uncultured waste of life.
Now I realise that you were requesting this song for someone else. I'm sorry I didn't quite get their name as I was busy fantasising about pummelling you in your fat head 50,000 times to catch it. But then even so if I had a friend who's day would be brightened up by listening to Achy Breaky fucking Heart the first thing I would do is bundle them on a plane to Zurich and then whisk them off to the first euthanasia clinic that would accommodate them. As a supposed member of the human race it should be your job to ridicule & mock this person for their total lack of taste, not advertising it on radio and forcing the rest of us to suffer as a result.

Yours sincerely
Richard

P.S. fuck you Brenda

FAKEPLASTICTHOMLOVER02 : It sucks, Thom Yorke sounds constipated in that song.

FAKEPLASTICTHOMLOVER01 : Yeah he's SUPPOSED to sound constipated in that song it fits in with the meaning of the song. If you had listened to Radiohead as long as I have and got every single song ever ever ever you'd know that.

FAKEPLASTICTHOMLOVER05 : I hate High & Dry. It's the worst song on OK Computer

FAKEPLASTICTHOMLOVER01 : LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL High & Dry isn't on OK Computer you loser

FAKEPLASTICTHOMLOVER05 : It is actually, it's on the limited edition purple & 15 inch purple & blue vinyl from Swaziland hand made by one legged black homeless lesbians.

FAKEPLASTICTHOMLOVER03 : Oh yeah I know that. I sold my copy because they were clearly selling out by releasing that. I blame the record company. Sir Thom Yorke was totally against it.

FAKEPLASTICTHOMLOVER04 : Pablo Honey Sucks

MYCHEMICALTOILETISTHEBEST : Hey I've never heard any Radiohead can someone make up a starter comp?

FAKEPLASTICTHOMLOVER01 : Ok i've made this one up for you

Urban, since I've never been a big fan of Yes, I was amused by your blow-by-blow description of your successful attempt to listen to a whole album...especially when you said the music sounded like loads of people banging cutlery together. I rather like surprises, so I should probably listen to that song.

This album consists of two songs both of approx 15 minutes each. Here's a brief description of each song.

N.Y. Scum - For the first 5 minutes some guy rips as much feedback out of his guitar as he can manage while being backed by a bunch of Hare Krishna's on percussion, all the while a drunk couple has a domestic argument. The final 2 minutes drunk guy attempts to make a techno record.

In a word ... Brilliant.

Hmm....your short review inspired me to listen again to a Psychic TV song (but a shorter one than N.Y. Scum): "Godstar." I also listened to "Have Mercy." They have a raw quirky sound that's fun. The "Have Mercy" song with the words "I love you" in it reminds me of a talking dog who says, "I ruv woo," whom I saw once on the David Letterman show.

I was disappointed I haven't found "N.Y. Scum" online yet, because I'd like to hear what a bunch of Hare Krishnas playing percussion sound like.

Haters - What remnants of a song there is here is quickly forgotten about after just a couple of minutes as the song decends into some random shouting & howling feedback.

In a word ... Brilliant.

Well, Urban, I did it: as promised, I listened to both songs. Your descriptions of them are really right on the mark, I felt. Here are a few of my minute-by-minute reactions to "N.Y. Scum" and "Haters," proof that I *did* actually listen to them. Didn't even need to be pinned down. ;)

N.Y. Scum
0:54, 1:06, and 1:17 - sounds like several space ships taking off while an iron worker hits an anvil surrounded by drummers.
1:47 - I stare down at the snarl of electric chords beneath the computer desk and think I really should organize them better.
2:04 - A Primal Scream! I didn't expect that.
2:15 - And more screaming
2:53 -A sobbing woman. I think it is a domestic dispute.
3:04 - Did I hear actual notes?! I think I did!! That got me kind of excited.
3:22 - Apparently the woman didn't like them much, because she's sobbing again.
7:29 - Holy chanting. Nice harmony. Now *this* is music. Peaceful. I'm starting to relax.
8:14 - Drat. Some sort of fight among people. And a dog is snarling. It doesn't sound friendly. I smile, thinking perhaps it is snarling at the musicians because of the high-pitched, piercing noises they are making.
10:19 - Gets kind of kinky. I perk up. Singer sings: "This is the place where the skin meets the skin and the skin goes in." Hmmm. Rhyming *and* sexual. Maybe this music isn't so bad after all! :)
15:55 - More shrieking, "Twisted! Very twisted!"

Haters
00:51 - Lyrics: "Sunny morning, bring the dawning bullshit," and "Where do you keep your dreams. In your pocket?"
I guess this is the deepest part of the song, where it shows the contrast between humanity's lofty psychological yearnings and awareness of the gritty reality as represented by fecal matter and sex.
3:07 - Sounds like the screeching of subway train wheels on tracks. A pleasant background beat continues.
4:00 - Uh oh. More screaming. Did my jukebox switch to the first song? Nope. Nope, this *is* the new one.
9:11 - I adjust myself because I worry I might get a blood clot sitting so still with my legs crossed in one direction.
11:15 - The rest of the song starts sounding like drunken and frenzied people shouting in a sports stadium. Maybe they are football or rugby fans.
12:19 - "Oh whoa whoa whoa," warbles the singer. I'm pleasantly reminded of what it's like when you go hiking in the mountains and get to a canyon where you notice an echo. So then everyone stands still and starts screaming weird stuff and listening to the echos. I daydream about mountains and pine trees.
12:56 - I think a heard a flute trilling briefly! That was nice.
13:21 - Guy starts to give the credits to the musicians. I check the time and am disappointed. More than a minute left! I thought this meant the song was almost over.
14:11 - Singer refers to himself as "stupid arrogant bastard on the microphone." At least he has a sense of humor! Over one more minute to go! Sigh.
14:54 - Singer says goodnight. There is scattered applause. I can see why the applause would be so thin.

DONE! Hah!

The songs made me think three things:
(1) I feel much better about my own guitar playing.
(2) Maybe this is music people like to listen to when they're high?
(3) I wondered why the singers go through the motions of shrieking when they don't really sound so upset. Yesterday I watched a documentary in which a man talked about what happened when his wife died in a car accident while he was driving. He said that when he saw a truck coming into their lane, he screamed, "Oh My God." The narrator asked him how he really said it. So then the man *really* screamed, at the top of his lungs, "OH MY GOD!!!" Now, THAT is screaming. I could feel his pain and I started to cry along with him. My main fault with the Psychic TV songs is that they seem empty of intent and emotion. I did like the growling dog, though.

FETCHER. 02-18-2010 07:07 PM

I wouldn't be brave enough to listen to that high. It'd probably send one onto cardiac arrest.

I'm so proud of you for not only making it to the end but for giving such an entertaining write up of it. You went far beyond the call of duty on this.

However I do feel that before you judge Psychic TV I feel as though I should show you this.
Believe it or not this is the exact same band you just listened to....

So NOW what do you say about them ;)

Well, Urban, they did a very nice cover of Good Vibrations...though I noticed the lyrics got a little odd in the middle...the man was singing something about snakes. I don't remember that in the original. I guess the Psychic TV quirkiness had to come out somewhere in the music!

I listened a second time to figure out what snakes have to do with good vibrations. Here are some of the odd spoken lyrics: "Time cascading down, and I see you slithering like a snake in a golden crown..(mumble)...around the black line with eyes that shine and shine. And I am old and I am young waiting to belong." Hmm. I actually like this weird part embedded in the happy, sunny love song. Makes the song fresh.

Sex change is an odd thing but the guy is still just a regular human.
Here's his interview with Ian Svenonious for anyone who cares to hear what Mr. Orridge has to say..

Genesis P. Orridge - Soft Focus | VBS.TV

At parts he does come off as the pretentious NY artist that he is but you can tell form this that he's not really any stranger than anybody. He just has a different point of view than most .. and breast implants.

That *was* an interesting interview, Engine. Genesis explains about the breast implants that s/he wants to destroy stereotypes and archetypes, black/white, and the concept of male/female to prevent people from hating anything that is "other."

I find it interesting, though, that Genesis so embraces cosmetic surgery (anything that changes the body) as if such change really substantively modifies the self. Really, in my experience, simply not shaving is a much easier and non-invasive way to challenge traditional gender dichotomies. Really freaks people out! :)

I didn't realize Psychic T.V. is credited with inspiring industrial music...and maybe even British pop.
