Recorded in 1994 with a very dynamic combination of musicians. Vocalist Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees), guitarist Mike McCready (Pearl Jam and others), Vocalist Layne Staley (AIC), Barette Martin (Drummer for Screaming Trees) on bass John Baker Saunders (The Lamont Cranston Band) and a very good sax player named Skerik.

They tried a very different approach with this song. Bongos, saxophone, piano, and bass were strong factors giving it a feeling of jazz. Added with Mark Lanegan's deep, heavy vocals instantly turns the song into a dark, depressing mood. Lanegans vocals are so effortless. He doesn't make it seem like he is singing a song to an audience, it feels more like he is singing to himself what is going on in his head and what he is thinking. He adds a beautiful drifty line of lyrics right before Staley joins in on vocals. When Staley makes his presence known, he adds a burst of energy to the song and, unlike Lanegan, who keeps his voice pretty steady and deep thoughout the song, Staley fluctuates his voice up and down, loud and soft. These two contrastings styles cooperate wonderfully together. And the sax solo in the middle gives the song a wild, almost spiraling downward effect. A few more powerful bursts from Staley and the song is over.

Forever, before actually having this song, I thought the band sounded like Ten Years After and I thought Alvin Lee was doing the vocals in it. But believe it or not KENNY FREAKIN ROGERS did the vocals for this song. Oh yes, this song just roars on that movie. Its quite something when a guy like Kenny Rogers can go through such extremes in his musical career. I have to say I am personally more fond of his psychedelic brother days, hehe.

The song that I find myself playing the most here recently is "I Talk To The Wind" by King Crimson, but Seltzer already made an amazing review for this song that I will not even attempt to compete with.

Instead the song I am going to review is one that may not be one of my favorites but everytime I listen to it, it puts a smile on my face.

SONG: Life's Been Good
ARTIST: Joe Walsh
ALBUM: But Seriously Folks

Definitely not an award-winner by any means this song, but one that is lighthearted and fun to jam to. Joe Walsh is quite the smart ass in this number. His lyrics are geniunly funny, because I can actually see this behavior coming from him. One of my favorite lines is "I can't complain but sometimes I still do". This song is all over the place instrumentally and it even changes its theme a one point in the middle. His guitar playing is pretty good though. He was lead guitar for The Eagles at one point in his career and even did the vocals for a few songs. He's got sort of a high pitched almost kid-like voice especially in this song. If you haven't heard it, give it a listen, especially if your in the mood for something humorous.

ARTIST: Buena Vista Social Club
ALBUM: Buena Vista Social Club

I have recently discovered Buena Vista Social Club and it has gotten me so excited. I had a very hard time picking out my favorite song to review and, even though this song is usually everybody's favorite, I have to agree that Chan Chan is one of their best.

I adore traditional sounding Cuban music and when I heard this, it was like I won the lottery. The vocals and the guitars are the stars in this piece. It is very hard to describe the mood this song, it is neither happy nor sad. I get the feeling of anticipating something big that is about to happen. Whatever it is, it sucks you in and makes you feel like you are actually sitting in Cuba listening to them in their little venue for that five minutes. I love songs that take you to another place and time, and this song is very successful at that. I must also mention the beautiful trumpet piece in there. It is oveflowing with tension and it adds a nice change up to the song for that time it is playing. Overall, a beautifully refreshing song that I find myself playing over and over because of the amazing way it makes me feel.

You've just reminded me that I need to get an Ibrahim Ferrer album as soon as possible, so cheers for that. The bloke who produced the Buena Vista album, Nick Gold, has had a hand in countless other great musical projects outside of the Anglosphere - if you like this album, you should definitely check some of them out.

But, yeah, fantastic song, fantastic album. Great thread too (I'm yet to have a proper read of it though).

I will most definitely check out the documentary, I came across a few clips of it while looking for a video to put on here and it looked like a winner. I'm putting it down on my list of movies I need to rent.

The only one I've heard of (I remember seeing it in a few highstreet shops as well) is Buena Vista Social Club Presents Ibrahim Ferrer - not too sure, but I think it's his solo debut. I presume it's his most well-known though as I've read a lot of positive reviews, so that's probably your (or, rather, our) best bet as a starting point.
