Palace Music:
Viva Last Blues (1995)

I could probably say "written by Will Oldham, produced by Steve Albini" and leave it at that. It's kind of hard for me to explain how perfect this album is. It's very short but longer in it's necessary repetition. Oldham blends sex and death throughout the album in songs that are gentle, or violent, or loud, or drunk. I don't know man.

And now a song about Will Oldham that has nothing to do with Palace Music.

Wonderful review, Ethan (no surprise there). I don't have this album but you can bet your ass i'll get it soon!

That Williamsburg Will Oldham Horror track is quite the harrowing tale.

Jeffrey Lewis is pretty much my hero. He wrote a song thing for Urban:

This looks incredible. I'm going to get this ASAP.
Also, I liked the stuff with Jeffrey Lewis, what are some album suggestions for him?

sleepy jack 06-03-2009 10:02 PM

jacklovezhimself 06-03-2009 10:04 PM

The sentence takes a turn right at the bold letters

you know i saw this the other day and i did a double take. what's a folk singer doing, working with a guy that bleeds noise and shit into everything he does? only Will Oldham could write a song about a blowjob and make it sound completely innocent.

consider me interested.

sleepy jack 06-03-2009 11:23 PM

Want me to hook you up with a link?

lol@JJJ's comment.

I dunno, Lil Wayne had a solid crack.

Damien Jurado:
Rehearsals for Departure (1999)

http://i39.tinypic.com/np3lzs.jpg

This album quite simply moves me. Particularly the opening track "Ohio." There was one night, it was like three in the morning and I was just driving through downtown and it was dark and I was feeling sad and alone and when it came on it just hit. The atmosphere of the song and the way Jurado sounds is just moving. I listened to it probably about thirty times and ended up red-eyed by the time I got home - that sounds really shitty but it was beautiful.

I don't know how to write reviews anymore. That video is my favorite though, swim showed it to me.

swim 06-28-2009 06:10 PM

I hate that he finger picks in that video because I love the strumming on that song.

[QUOTE=sleepy jack;692640]Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard:
Em Are I (2009)

http://www.roughtraderecords.com/images/126t.jpg

When I first got this album I listened to "If Life Exists" like thirty times before getting around to listening to the album in it's entirety. This happened with a variety of songs (the surprisingly catchy Broken Broken Broken Heart and the agnostic anthem Whistle Past the Graveyard being the other big two) and it's only two months after owning this that I can listen to the album without pausing and repeating certain tracks (for the most part.)

It's tempting to call this the best thing Lewis has done so far but it's easier for me to call it the most accessible. Some of the lo-fi magic is gone but given the quality of the music it's easy to forgive.

Hey - I hadn't noticed this before I reviewed the album in my journal. The bolded part is a really good description. I really don't like that Jeffrey Lewis kid's music though. His Will O. song drags on for like 25 minutes and its boring after about 30 seconds..
EDIT: on further inspection - Lewis's music isn't so bad - the will o song is just way too long

sleepy jack 09-12-2009 02:10 PM

Well as someone in the struggling musician I can't get enough of the song but maybe that's because reading the words is a weird sort of hug for me.
