Escape the Fate - The Day I Left The Womb

Last.fm is playing.
Escape the Fate is part of my library cause I own a song by them.
This song comes on.
Heartbreaking. I haven't heard the lyrics, but I can hear it in his voice.
I know it's heartbreaking.
After he left the band, they refused to play this song because it was too close to his heart to play.
The first time I played this, it wasn't in falsetto, and I ended up with tears in my eyes. I had to play it again.
Unfortunately, I'm not in the University practice room, and I'm in my bedroom at 10 49 pm.
Falsetto is the way to go with this for now.

Anyway, this song is by a band not many people are going to like, and I'm okay with that.
But when I heard this, it broke my heart, and I had to share it.

I've been trying to cover this for months now, and I finally have my voice back, no pneumonia or any allergies bringing me down.
I'd like to know what you think of the song itself, my cover is just my version.
But do you feel the same way when you listen? Or do you feel nothing?
Is it just today's "emo" music?
Or is it something you can relate to?
Being left is something I can relate to. By family members, even.
So it hits me pretty close to home.

Here it is.
[YOUTUBE]qdAZT_XifDc&hl

Edit: I don't know what it is, but I sound really muffled for some reason. It didn't sound like that when i played it on YouTube.
I'll try directing it towards me next time, but I get way too shy and it won't come out as... enthusiastic, I suppose.
>.<

NumberNineDream 01-14-2010 06:43 PM

About the song you posted at first, it didn't do much to me. The lyrics are very poignant obviously, but other than that, I thought he was overdoing it some times, but I guess that's what "emo" is about.
On the other hand, your vocals were much subtler, and that's why I kinda preferred your version over the original.
Still, I don't think that's one of the songs I'd be digging, but I think you should record yourself more often.
Cheers.

I'm glad you like my cover. [=
It's funny you say you like the subtler version, because I was afraid it wasn't emotional enough. :3
^_^ I think I'm going to record myself again with more emotion, I'm not sure yet, but I'll definitely do another song. :)
Thank you!

I really like your cover Sugar, it was very nicely done. I have listened to ETF before, and I actually like 3 songs from them - "Ashely", "Something" and "Harder Than You Know". I don't really fancy his voice in this song though... not sure what angle he was going for but much like 9, I quite actually prefer your version. I'll be looking forward to seeing some more covers by you though. Well done :)

Yayay! [=
It's so funny that you two say that, haha. I think his voice is perfect for the part and I felt like I wasn't filling his shoes!
Thank you for listening to my cover. <3 I know it's a little muffled, but I'm so glad you liked it. I'll definitely put up another video as soon as I find a good song for my voice.
Maybe something where I don't need falsetto! Thank you thank you thank you.

Just a little journal entry...

Setting: Laundromat.
Time: 21:30

The man who works at night is constantly playing loud music.
From Lady Gaga to whatever Opera to Pink Floyd, he listens to a variety of music.
Since I wasn't feeling the Pink Floyd tonight, I decided to listen to Coheed and Cambria on my Zune.

He saw that I was tapping to my music and asked what I was listening to.
When I told him who and what genre they were often considered, he asked if I wanted to listen to it on the big speakers.
I told him I thought it was a little dark for the laundromat, but he challenged me, and started BLASTING King Crimson.
And then asked me after a few songs if I thought it was still too dark and heavy. Even though I still thought it was, I plugged my Zune into the speakers anyway and began playing the album "No World For Tomorrow."
He liked it.
I was loving it.

Everyone was listening to the same album I had just been listening to in but one earbud.
What a good way to do laundry.

Needless to say, that guy's pretty chill.

All the best, Sugar, my dear.

Dear AwwSugar,

I knew from what you wrote about a song earlier in your journal that abandonment hits you hard. I had wondered what triggered this sensitivity in you. Now I know you have experienced being left. It sounds like you haven't been able to depend on some people you had yearned to have stay in your life.

Yes, I can relate to the song and the anguish of these boys who grew to be men and still feel abandoned. They still wrestle with the feeling that they are worthless because the person (parent), who should have been the most important and comforting person in their lives, was not there for them. You can hear the heartbreak in the vocals, which are nearly screamed, almost ironic, since it is obvious they are not really fine. The song reminds me of a Tracy Bonham song about "Mother, Mother."

Your version of "The Day I Left The Womb" is definitely sweeter than the original. It is hard to sing with a throat tight due to being near to tears...or when you can't sing out. I'd like to hear your full out version when you are in a practice room and not in your dorm. When I sing and start to cry, my throat clenches up and I can barely get a sound out.

I am wondering now: are you feeling lonely? Is this one reason you like music, because it fills an emotional void? You always seem so stable and secure. (You don't have to answer here! I'm just wondering out "loud.")

About abandonment: I used to feel the bereft feeling as a physical pain. Part of the palm of my left hand ached when the feeling came over me. I thought it was interesting that emotion caused a physical pain in my body...as if the emotional anguish stabbed me in my left hand, in the part of the palm that is furthest from both fingers and thumb. I would rub this aching corner of my palm, trying to make the pain go away, but of course since it was a pain caused by emotion, my emotions and not my hand were what needed healing and care. I've always wondered if anyone else feels or has felt emotion as a physical pain.

To feel left and unvalued by those you love is an awful feeling.

Ohh, I didn't see this response earlier.
I didn't want to for fear of criticism as well.
But try to imagine the most open-minded person in the entire world, and that's the kind of guy we're dealing with here.
I wasn't afraid to show him, just to hear anything from annoyed, late-night clothes-washing customers.

Wow, I much prefer your cover of this over the original. I don't really like that guys voice much.

The lyrics are very heartbreaking you're right. I know many people don't like the whole 'emo' thing, but when you really listen to some stuff without being judgmental you may find some music that you can relate to or enjoy. Nice post Sugar. :)

I'm glad you like my cover, DO. [=
And you're absolutely right, a lot of people will limit themselves from listening to this type of music because it's considered "emo" and they never get a chance to find the connection a lot of the music can create.
Thank you for reading. [=

Amesours

Youtube added to the recommendation feature.
They now tell you what video made them recommend the one that they did.
Because I favourited an Alcest video, this band was recommended to me.
Have I fallen in love? It's too late to tell, it's 2 15 in the morning and I can't listen to the music too loudly.
Am I interested? Most definitely.
Since this is my last day at home for a few months, I downloaded their self-titled album for the ride home. I'm definitely excited.
[[= Night everyone.

Though I can't say that I listen to any non-english bands that was very nice Sugar. :D
Any other info on this band?

I really dig that entire The xx album. I discovered it right before it started getting a lot of hype. I haven't played it nearly enough, but it's a good listen. It's very heartfelt and relaxing.

Yeah I was introduced to Alcest and loved them, as soon as this was recommended, I jumped on the opportunity to listen.
I have to say, I'm a fan of more of the work by Alcest, but this band comes close for me.

I've only listened to the Amesoeurs record once and i liked it but it didnt have the same immediate impact that the Alcest record did. I should probably listen to it again. It's a shame that they split though because there was definite promise and potential there.

Im glad you're liking Alcest so much :)

That's how I felt with the Amesoeurs(I hate spelling that) album as well.
I like the album, but I wasn't amazed like I was with Alcest.
I think there was promise, and I would have followed them, too, continued buying their albums and such. Do you know why they broke up?

Hehe, you knew I loved them!

Im sure it was just cited as musical differences or whatever the usual reason is. I think they were disagreed on what to do with the next record.

I liked the varied but simple drum patterns in the Amesours song, which gave some variety throughout it. I'm curious what the singer is singing about.

I'll have to check out Alcest, now that I know you all like that group so much!

Matt & Kim - Daylight

In my suite, I have the loudest speakers, so when we're all in our rooms, I'm the designated DJ.
This song is our, "Today's a really good day, let's celebrate" song.
Musically, it's not the most amazing.
Vocally, he's not the best.
Melody-wise, it's not overly complex.
But I love the song nonetheless. It's a feel good song, it makes all of us feel happy, and it's a great song to blast when we're all done with classes and feel like enjoying our time to ourselves.
Tell me what you think, or don't. [= Just thought I'd share a song that makes me happy.

Daylight! I discovered the song through the Bacardi commercial and I love it for pretty much the same reasons you said. There's nothing particularly great about the song, there really isn't. But I find myself listening to it a lot when I'm done with work and have some time off to kick back and relax.

Oh, and if you like Amesoeurs or Alcest, I would highly recommend Les Discret. It's members of Amesoeurs and it's fucking awesome.

"Daylight" *is* a cute, feel-good song, AwwSugar...and I like how the video shows Matt & Kim having fun together, simple fun, being goofy.

I like the video scene when they're playing their music in the dumpster, even when they get trash dumped on them. Being able to see humor while in a not-so-good situation is a helpful quality to have...and to bring out in your friends. I like thinking of you all blasting this song and enjoying your time to yourselves after classes!

Coheed and Cambria - Year of the Black Rainbow

Everybody who knows me, knows I'm in love with Coheed and Cambria.
Everybody who knows me, knows that this is the one album I've been waiting for since I found out it was being released in April.
Eventually, the album got leaked, and even though I will buy the album to support the band, I HAD to hear the music.
My good friend Aaron was talking about his favourite songs and I just couldn't hold it anymore.

I could no longer wait for April (13th?) to come along, I had to hear it.
I was doing a project, pulling an all nighter. Was I excited? Absolutely. Was I done with my work? No, but that's beside the point.

The first song, "One", is creepy. It's creepy and it gives me a weird feeling in my stomach. And I hadn't slept, and it was dark and I was alone. I wasn't quite sure how to handle everything that was going on when I first heard it. Since then, I haven't listened to it again because I know how it made me feel, but it was really good nonetheless, I can recall that much. The next song that had a really big impact on me was "Far." The intro to "Far" is simple, but it's really good for the album and the song itself. The echoes in the song are probably my favourite part. Usually, I'm not a fan of echoes, but they were well used.
For some reason, I saw "This Shattered Symphony" as something I'd really like to have sex to. It's not a sexual song, nor is it the best one on the album, so I'm not sure what was going on in my mind, but it doesn't change how I feel.
Moving on...
"Pearl of the Stars" is probably the song I find myself singing the most. Coheed often has one song on an album that's slow, a little dark, but romantic. This is that song:

When you go
I will know
Follow you to the stars
And when the world burns apart
There'll be a place for your heart
I'd give you everything
If only I'd known you'd take it
But you won't, cause you're you
That's why I'll always love you
My Pearl of the Stars

It reminds me of From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness with the song "Wake Up" where he sings:

I'll do anything for you,
Kill anyone for you.

So leave yourself intact
'Cause I will be coming back.
In a phrase to cut these lips,
I love you.

It obviously isn't as dark, but the death of other people is always somewhat sensitive. And it's something different when it's for love.

The last song is always the most important on a Coheed and Cambria album.
The Final Cut is an amazing song on From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness. It's the last song, and it's more about the feeling and the emotion than it is about the vocals or just one instrument. In another post, I'll show The Neverender Tour version of the Final Cut, where Claudio leaves the rest of the band to play alone after a while, and one by one, each band member leaves until the drummer is left, playing a solo on his own.

The song "Year of the Black Rainbow" can only be described as epic. There is one part of it that's very busy. Too busy, in fact, for me to listen to the song while I'm trying to do homework or read, but it's an amazing piece. There are more lyrics than there was in "The Final Cut" but eventually, as the album nears the end, the instruments begin to drown out the vocals.

All in all, it was an amazing album, and without TOO much bias, I recommend it to people who can appreciate Coheed and Cambria.

[= Thank you.

Good write up. :)

Im not sure if Coheed would be my thing. I saw them live once but it was at a festival, on the main stage and in the middle of the day which didn't suit them very well. I might give them a go sometime though.

I can send you the album.
I'm about to post the performance from the Neverender Tour that I was talking about.
I think you should listen.
I can even put some links in this right now.

Here's the performance from the Neverender Tour that I was talking about.

The end is hot.
I don't know how else to describe it.
When Claudio has it face in the guitar?
Gave me chills.
Here you go.
Tell me what you think.

Everybody who knows me, knows that this is the one album I've been waiting for since I found out it was being released in April.
My good friend Aaron was talking about his favourite songs and I just couldn't hold it anymore.

AwwSugar, I had fun listening to your...wait, did you write favourite?... Coheed and Cambria songs! (Okay, okay...that will be the last time I joke with you about the spelling. I think. ;) )

The next song that had a really big impact on me was "Far." The intro to "Far" is simple, but it's really good for the album and the song itself. The echoes in the song are probably my favourite part. Usually, I'm not a fan of echoes, but they were well used.

"Far" was *my* favourite, Sugar. The song sounds sweet, warm, and emotional, with heavy drums and particularly bass. It actually gave me chills! I like the bell-like tones of the electric guitar. I also like the atmosphere they create in their songs, such as the gentler "Pearl of the Stars," which has a wash of sound in the background setting a mood.

Coheed and Cambria's songs remind me a little of Def Leppard, whose music I listened to a lot when *I* was in college. The similarites I hear are in the use of heavy drums, the melodies, and the songs' emotions. For example, contrast Coheed and Cambria's "Far" with "Hysteria" by Def Leppard. Do you hear the similarity, too?

I know what you mean about "Pearl of the Stars," Erica. I really love that song.
I can see why you made the connection between this song and "Far."
I wouldn't have ever compared the two before, though.
Thank you for reading. [=
