Orgasm In Journal Form-A James Thread

I had a journal once. It was a barren wasteland with a few short reviews about bands I like, it wasn't very good and I deleted it because I was working on an albums list. I am still working on that album list but what is the harm in having a journal too? So I made this new one and it shall be amazing and much better than my last one.

I'll try and do a little variety of posts, album reviews, special tribute posts to artists and general thoughts on life. I hope people read it, I haven't posted a lot on here recently what with exams and ****loads of snow restricting my internet access. I've missed it :(

So guys get ready, strap up and get ready for the high octane thrill ride that is Orgasm In Journal Form! First review up within the hour!

Sorry guys, my internet has been really messed up. Because of the snow my town is like cut off from civilisation. I'll hopefully get it done today.

Pig Destroyer-Prowler In The Yard
http://www.merch.com/images/NOR.CD.PDY.jpg

That just may be the worst album artwork in existence. Packed full with cliches about Heavy Metal artwork and overall just unpleasant to look at. But for your own sake do not let that put you off this album. "Grindcore? Wtf is Grindcore? That sounds stupid" I used to say, even the name sounded like something awful that was only admired by frat-boys, scene kids or extreme metalheads. I put this past me and checked out Napalm Death's Scum. It was a good album, started off great but dragged on towards the end, so I didn't pay it much attention. I hadn't heard much about anyother Grindcore artists. Then while lurking someone's Last Fm. a few months ago, I noticed they had a lot of plays from Pig Destroyer, I had nothing better to do so I downloaded Prowler In The Yard and Phantom Limb.

As Prowler In The Yard began there's a Stephen Hawking style computer voice. The first thing that struck me about this was the complexity and beauty of the lyrics for a Grindcore release, especially one with such cheesy artwork and band name. This was my first clue that this was more than your average Grindcore. The Jennifer lyrics are below.

"Jennifer wrestled her friend playfully to the ground
in front of the snowcone stand and began licking at the
girls eyeballs, as if they were sugar cubes.
Their bodies convulsed and flailed with an almost seizure
like intensity.
At times their pale limbs seeming to shift back and forth
from one torso to the other.
A crowd gathered almost immediately to watch these two
girls tie and untie their bodies like a pair of pit-vipers.
They were confused, or concerned, or
shocked, or aroused, or all of the above.
But no-one dared interfere with the performance.
Jennifer's long ashen hair hung down concealing the girls face
like a curtain around a hospital bed.
No one had any idea that the girls eyes were revolving
under her ruby tongue.
"This is disgusting, it's pornography"
exclaimed a pasty slut white woman in a fur coat,
vanilla ice-cream smeared across her double chin like a money shot.
Counting a balding professor type in his
mid-forties, his left hand stuffed crassly down the
front of his pants "No, no, no. This is beautiful,
this is art.""

I mean come on, they'e some of the best lyrics I've ever heard. Intense, creative, original and honest lyrics. The lyrics here are an effective comparison for the release itself. Some may find this music disgusting, ugly and monstrous, but for others it is beauty, it is art and it is fascinating. The album only gets better from here, it's a rare example of an album which is very backloaded and increases in quality all the way through. One of the interesting things about Pig Destroyer is the absence of bass on their albums. While I find the bass to be my favourite instrument and I even play it I must say this works in favour to Pig Destroyer's overall sounds. It makes their music seem more chaotic, intense and dare I use a cliche, brutal.

Pig Destroyer throughout the next 15 or so tracks really changed my opinion on Grindcore. Rivetingly fast and crazy tracks that are fun but have deep, emotional and honest lyrics to follow that up. But once you reach the end of the album, that is where your mind is truly blown, the last two tracks are some of the most intense, building and all around awesome songs i've ever heard, from any genre. It's with these two tracks that Pig Destroyer surpassed the cheesy name, genre and artwork and became an admirable group of musicians that I would visit time and time again. The short and sweet Junkyard God with some of the heaviest drumming you will hear followed by the long and brooding Piss Angel . Piss Angel just seems to grow and grow and get better and better, they mind bending guitar riff crawling into your ears and massaging them with the talent and creativety of Pig Destroyer . For me this song is their magnum opus.

In retrospect Pig Destroyer are a band which surpass the grindcore genre(one genre which I certainly don't like the execution of, or the name) and create fascinating and interesting fast paced heavy music, with genuinely well thought out lyrics(rare for this type of music) to fall back on. I would certainly recommend.

Top notch review, James!

I may actually check the album out - my cousin definitely owns a copy and is good about lending CDs to me for ripping.

The style and feel of those lyrics remind me a great deal of Bukowski's poetry. Not a bad thing at all, imo! :)

Thanks! If you decide to check it out tell me how you felt. And I understand the Bukowski comparison, certainly a good thing.

Nice review, James. I love that album but yes, the artwork is definitely bad.

Ooh, this should be good. I enjoyed your review James, though I'm pretty sure Grindcore's not my thing. Looking forward to more.

2010-A Year In Music And A Year In Life

http://carnivalfeteish.files.wordpre...-the-tiger.jpg

2010, in many ways has been the worst year of my life. Never before have so many things went wrong, one after the other and often I felt like I was being crushed by my emotions. However, when things were getting to tough and I felt there was nobody to turn to, music was there for me and could make me feel better. In early Spring when my mum had a heart attack and I stayed at my sister's house for a while, the radiant tones and soothing heart tones of Joanna Newsom were there to calm me down and stop my worry. During summer, my laziness finally took it's toll as I failed my english exam and didn't make it into higher, but the beautiful lyrics and wonderful piano music of The National's High Violet helped to reassure me that it wasn't the end of the world. Then through into the colder months, when my friends disappeared one by one like the leaves on the trees, the relationship between me and my mother deteriorated and I felt like I was alone in the world, the music of Kanye West, Agalloch, Deerhunter and Envy comforted me in the fact that somewhere out there were people like me, who can appreciate the same things such as the wonderful music on my iPod.

2010 has been a big year for music, not just for me but for the whole world. Many musical legends have passed away, leaving hundreds of fans upset or even in tears. The loss of Alex Chilton especially affected me, I consider Big Star to be the best band to come out of America and the crafters of the best type of Pop music. He was a real tortured soul and it's fascinating how he could write both upbeat pop classics like September Gurls as well as heart wrenching dark classics like Holocaust and Nightime.

Jay Reatard is also one of my favourite musicians now and I'm really disappointed that I didn't really discover him until his death, he knew how to have fun while making music in a time when a lot of bands take themselves far to serious. Blood Visions may even be a five star album from me, it's just full of pop anthems.

Mark Linkous or Sparklehorse was another sad loss and another great troubled musician lost to suicide. His brand of mellow, emotional songs are masterful with his song Piano Fire being one of my favourite collaborations of all time and Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot maybe even being my favourite acoustic indie type album. The song Cow somehow manages to go on for over seven minutes without changing an awful lot, but still leaves you hanging on for more.

Some other musicians who are sadly missed:Ronnie James Dio was of course an icon, I admire his work with Rainbow, Black Sabbath and his solo stuff, especially Holy Diver. I didn't listen to Dio much, but he has my respect, and I cannot deny that his music is of a high quality. Eyedea and Nujabes are other artists I was sad to here about dying but didn't listen to much in their lifetime, after their deaths I revisited their work and now I see them for what they were, immensely talented rappers who were one in a million. Ari Up from The Slits was a great frontwoman and Cut is one of the most unique and interesting albums from the early punk bands. Peter Christopherson from Coil and Throbbing Gristle is another sad loss, the man made some of the greatest experimental music around. If I have forgotten any other fantastic musician I'm sorry, I had to rely on memory.

As for the big releases of 2010 there have been plenty of brilliant and important releases. I will cover some of the big, well known releases now and cover others in my future entries "Hidden Gems of 2010".

Kanye West probably released the biggest album of 2010 with My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, a unique take on Hip-Hop with a sound we'll come to hear a lot of in the next few years. Runaway may be the best song I've heard all year, Kanye West is realising his bad behaviour and a tinge of regret can be heard. The long tracks and incredibly complicated production works perfectly with the album and more and more hip-hop artists will be seen putting longer tracks into their albums and maybe even releasing them as singles like with the aforementioned Runaway.

Agalloch's Marrow of the Spirit is another big album from 2010. Agalloch have probably been the most consistent Metal band of the 00s, with this release they showed they still had the talent, changed their sound slightly and released in my opinion their best album yet. The album is compellingly atmospheric and it's perfect for lying down and reading to.

Joanna Newsom is the most interesting artist of the 00s and with Have One On Me she released her biggest album yet. The triple album lacks some of the charm of my personal favourite The Milk Eyed Mender or the fairytale, whick you away element of Ys but it's still fantastic and is a lot more mature than her other albums. It's bursting with high quality songs especially '81 which would be in my top five Joanna Newsom songs. Her harp playing is better than ever, the harp is infamously hard to play and it's great how she seems to play the harp so perfectly while singing in her trademark high pitched beautiful style.

The National are my favourite "Indie Rock" band by far. Alligator is a five star album from me. Matt Berninger's deep voice can carry such emotion through his almost perfect lyrics. High Violet is a great album and it seems to have finally got The National the praise they deserve. I attempted to buy tickets to see The National last month but they were sold out, this in my opinion shows that their brilliance has finally been realised. England is one of the most beautiful songs they've ever written, at just over five minutes it leaves me in absolute awe.

Other important mainstream releases this year have been; Pink Friday by Nicki Minaj is packed full of catchy pop songs, even the inclusion of Will.i.am on Check It Out can't ruin it's potential as a catchy pop classic. Nicki Minaj has a really unique and interesting personality and take on music. Janelle Monae released her debut album The ArchAndroid, personally the best and most experimental RnB album I've ever heard. Deerhunter released Halycon Digest, their most straightforward release yet but still enjoyable. Swans came out with their first album in a long time showing that after 30 years, they are still a force to be reckoned with.

I've missed a few, but I don't want to just list every big release, that would be mundane. I've came to the conclusion that 2010 is the best year in music so far. When you think about it music just gets better by the year, with new genres and movements forming constantly. Never before now has there been such a large amount of genres on offer, and in 2011 there will be even more. Sure you can have a favourite year, if some favourites of yours were released then but you can't truly argue that said year had more to offer than the present.

That Pig Destroyer gave me a grand mal seizure. My lawyers will be contacting your lawyers. LOL

I would never had you down as a Pig Destroyer fan but the fact that you noticed the lack of Bass guitar and still got into it suggests someone who appreciates music on many levels however it reaches our ears. Good stuff.

I would be interested to hear what you think of this album:

A Few Underrated Gems Of 2010

I originally was planning to do separate reviews of some underrated albums, but after writing a review I accidently deleted it. It's getting late and I don't want to retype the review so instead I'll do a roundup of the albums, like in my last entry. I apoligise for my laziness and may look like a lazy journal writer, but I really want to move on and do more reviews so I want this over with.

2010 in my opinion has been the best year I have ever came across in music. So many fascinating albums have been released this year and being around to hear the albums as they are released has been amazing. A lot of the albums I've heard this year haven't got enough love in end of year lists, and have been awarded by me as hidden gems of 2010.

Forest Swords are a band I very seldom see mentioned and I can't for the life of me figure out why. Their debut album Dagger Paths was released in february and it's one of those rare album that are near impossible to pin down genrewise. The album goes from sprawling, heavy, straight up Psych Rock songs with droning guitars to lovely, folky songs with perfect pop melodies. You can tell the guy has excellent music taste just by listening to the album and combining all these tracks together creates an absolute work of genius in my eyes. The guys vocals are brilliant and near perfect to the music, really staunch and reminiscent of a foggy night. Miarches the opener is my favourite, gorgeous song that I can;t understand any hate for.

Sean McCann is another musician who is very underrated. His album Open Resolve is one of many albums he released this year and it still manages to inspire more awe than most artists who released one. The music is so incredibly layered and complicated it's hard to believe the guy is so obscure. Pass Away may not be the best song of the year but it's certainly the most epic and the most fascinating. Sean McCann has been called the new Sun Ra and I would say it's an apt comparison as both had a certain mystique to their work.

Gavin B. 01-09-2011 07:39 PM

In addition to the Dagger Paths ep, the Forest Swords released Rattling Cage which is a 2 song single released in June. One of the reasons the Swords are under the radar is they've only recorded the five song Dagger Paths e.p. and a few impressive singles on an obscure NYC based indie label. I'm embedding the single Rattling Cage to give your readers an idea of what the Forest Swords sound like. The chiming of the synthesizer near the beginning of the song, reminds me of the sound of those xylophone type instruments used to play Balinese gemelan music.

I know very little about Forest Swords but they have a great studio sound. I'm not even sure if there's one or two lead guitarists in the band. It could be the same guy playing double tracked leads. The guitars leads have the kind of reverb soaked, acid burned psychedelic sound that I've always loved. The is a bit of a traditional Celtic folk influence in some of the the guitar riffs.

I listen to a lot of music, and rare ones that sound unlike any of the other ones are the ones that really grab my attention.

Planning on getting this up and running again. I have had an abscence and would like to let my dear friends here know what I have been up to. I have been a bit of a slacker with this journal in the past but I plan to change that. Truthfully, I can't find much to post on the general forums right now, because of the vast amounts of new members that I am unfamiliar with. I plan on using this a lot to make me feel a bit more comfortable here again. In my abscence, I have been doing a lot of creative writing and it's became a bit of a hobby of mine. So I am now a lot more accomplished with my writing I think(and hope). So keep your eyes out for a good few posts in here for the foreseeable future. I'll try to throw some stuff together tonight.

I'm basically in the same boat here...that and I've stopped caring as much as I once did. I like my journal though, so posting random crap in it still gives me kicks.

Looking forward to seeing what you've got lined up for this, Jim.

My Life In 2011

My last journal entry was a review of the hidden gems of 2010. Now, one year on I am once again looking back at the past year in music. I haven't listened to as much new releases as last year, mainly setting them aside to wallow in my music collection and revisit albums which I hadn't yet grown to love. Let's us start off with what this year was like for me.
At the end of 2010 I was the lowest of the low. I had lost all of my friends that year and I basically had nobody left. It was the worst stage of the loneliness that has plagued me for a while now and I was in a very dark place. If 2010 was the year where I burnt all my bridges, 2011 was the year I built more. Better bridges, like the previous bridges were ramshackle wooden bridges and the new ones are made of a strong corregated iron....I'll stop now, might be milking this metaphor a bit.
From the very beginning 2011 was a hell of a lot better. I was pleased with my prelim results, I got high for the first time and most of all I got a hell of a lot closer to a girl I knew and we soon became the inseperable, best friend types....I was invited to a st patricks day party where I got drunk for the first time, that was where I met my new friends. After a few meetups I was a fully fledged member of their group and I haven't looked back, my dark days were over - I was happy again.
Until I broke away the denial and realised me and the aforementioned girl were not friends. I liked her. I really liked her. I worked up the courage to tell her and everything f*cked up from there. She didn't feel the same, we drifted apart, she got a boyfriend, they broke up, we don't even acknowledge eachother anymore. Six months down the line I still feel the same. Everytime I try to get over it just comes back and hits me again, twice as hard as before. There was a moment when I satrted to like someone else, then she came out of the closet to me whilst drunk. So I decided against that and just about then me and the original girl had the first conversation in months and now I am as bad as ever.
Tagging my whole year with "unrequited love" would be an exaggeration. It was a large part of it but it's still been quite an amazing year, but with overviews I find it hard not to focus on the negatives. My dad got married, that was fun. But then my grandpa was dreadfully ill in hospital for a while. I turned sixteen, I can buy scratchcards but the idea of being an adult is terrifying. Thinking about time right now makes me head hurt at the moment. The fact is, in a year and a bit i'll be getting ready for university. It's like I am getting ready to be born again, there's a countdown and once it reaches the bottom I have to restart everything that I have achieved in the last six years. It feels as if I am goin back to the first day of primary school, not knowing anybody and suddenly expected to maintain all thse new responsibilities. I can get a job, I can get married, I can concieve a child. It's crazy. i still feel like a child myself.
Overall, 2011 has had it's ups and downs. It's been the best year of my life up until this point. I pray 2012 be even better.

The Soundtrack

2011 has been a strange year musicwise. It seems as the years go by the music scene gets more peculiar. It's like a huge melting pot of different styles, a giant pot of soup that is cooking. Constantly adding new ingredients and seasoning. As previously mentioned I have been unbelieanly out of the loop these past few months but before that I had kept up to date and I have been catching up this last week.

In terms of big music news we had The Stone Roses reunion. I was originally going to TITP too but decided not to go because of lack of funds. I will no doubt regret it when I hear next year about how the minds of thousands were blown by a phenomenal performance but until then I am not too bothered. Amy Winehouse passed away, I was never a fan but it was a tragic loss of a beautiful voice. It made me see what awful attitudes people had towards death when I heard the uproar after her passing. My facebook feed was flooded with horrible comments like "F*cking junkie scum deserved it" and "Just another drug addict of the streets". It says a lot for the respect people have for the artist's in the spotlight when human lives are being trivialised like that. In 2010 some of the greatest musicians of all time were taken from us - Mark Linkous, Alex Chilton, Jay Reatard. I feel sad whenever I hear about deaths but thankfully none of my favourite artists left us this year. Also Steps reformed and Westlife disbanded.
http://howismyface.com/download/scared_boy_crying1.jpg
Me, when Westlife broke up
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_6Ngfe6cCB_.../Overjoyed.jpg
Me, when Steps got back together.

In terms of releases, this year has once again overwhelmed me with the eclectic masses of new music. A quick look at the Rate Your Music charts and the end of year lists on Pitchfork, Tiny Mix Tapes and The Quietus makes it clear that PJ Harvey's "Let England Shake" is an album that many publications consider a great achievement. I personally don't think it deserves to be considered the best album this year. It's enjoyable enough but if you observe Polly Jean's previous albums and how they have been rated for their respective years it's ridiculous. Dry was rated the fiftieth greatest album of the year and I find it a lot better than Let England Shake. Dry is an album of such honesty, intensity and rawness, it just blows me away every time. Let England Shake is warm, welcoming and most of all, it's filled with catchy pop songs. They're both fantastic and my preference will most likely say more about my tastes instead of the quality of the albums. What it says more than anything else however, is PJ Harvey's diversity as a musician. In a career which spans almost two decades, she's been almost impossible to nail down, evolving her style from album to album.

My choice for the album of the year would be ****ed Up's David Comes To Life (Only #240 on the RYM charts for 2011). Hardcore punk has a bad reputation. Most music snobs consider it simple, barbaric and lacking in substance. With David Comes To Life, ****ed Up prove them wrong in one of the most ambitious albums Hardcore Punk has ever seen. It's a concept album, telling the story of David and Veronica as they fall in love and likewise, drift apart. I happen to love Damian Abraham's screams. 2011 has been a great year for illustrating that great punk is not dead and brilliant modern punk albums do exist. Along with the energy of Iceage's New Brigade, the lyrical flare and storytelling of La Dispute's Wildlife and the heavy crust stylings of Amebix's Sonic Mass - ****ed Up have made for a great year in modern punk music.

Getting late, I will do a list of honourable mentions tomorrow <3

A few points, or replies, or responses, whatever you like to call them.

First off, sorry that you had such a crappy year. I know what that's like, but that's another story. Something that did strike a chord with me though was your recounting of your best-friend-to-more-than with that girl. I had something very similar, and yes, it's a real pain when the feelings are not reciprocated isn't it? You kind of wish you hadn't said anything. Makes a mockery of that old adage, "nothing to lose by asking". Of course there is! A whole friendship, sometimes.

Hope things are getting a bit more on track for you now, and you're looking forward to Christmas. One point on Amy Winehouse: no it was not nice what people said, but the view I took was that she constantly refused treatment, acted like there was nothing wrong with her, and really, created a terrible role model for impressionable young girls. I think that was unforgivable, and while I would never say anyone deserves to die, I do find it hard to have much sympathy. It's like George Best: given TWO chances at life and he STILL drank himself to death! In my opinion, that's thumbing your nose at fate and daring her to do her worst. Baaaad move...

Anyway, though they may not be your favourites, I would just like to point out that we lost two rock legends over the course of the last two years, Ronnie James Dio and Gary Moore, and yes, it's terribly sad when people that talented and respected die so young.

As for Westlife disbanding, well sorry but I did pop the odd champagne cork! :) Being an Irishman too sort of lent weight to my feelings about them. It annoyed me that their breakup was HEADLINE NEWS. I mean, HEADLINE. Front of the papers. And I'm not talking the Mirror, either. Respectable Irish newspapers led with the story, as did the news. What sort of world are we living in?

But in the spirit of the season, let me wish you a Happy Christmas and hope the new year will be a lot better for you.
And good luck at university!

James, this may be my new favorite journal. It stuns me how much we have in common and I never realized it.

First off, great to see you reviewing Pig Destroyer. I'll admit, I haven't heard that album, but I adore Terrifyer and enjoy Phantom Limb a great deal. I'm not a massive grindcore fan, I like some of it, but they're one of the bands I always go back to.

Secondly, glad to see you give a nod to Envy. Recitation is an awesome album, one of my favorites of last year and certainly my favorite Envy album. It blew me away on first listen.

Finally, your last post put a huge smile of my face. I too once had a crappy year, similar to that one (although I was 14 when mine happened, not as recent or... mature I suppose). And you tying David Comes To Life, my favorite album of 2011. I agree that the album is a metaphor for a bad breakup, and the pain, guilt, and finally, acceptance felt and expressed by one party. It's an album most of us can relate to.

I agree that this year was great for punk. Have you heard Touche Amore's Parting The Sea Between Brightness And Me? You might like it if you liked Wildlife. It's the same style of punk, but faster, briefer, and more direct.

Anyways, awesome thread, will read again. :)

It seems to be a common scenario and a lot of people have been in similiar positions. I definetly learned from the experience though and I would be lying if I said it didn't feel good to unload. Perhaps if I had supressed it I would be in a better position but there is no way of knowing. It's all part of growing up I guess.

I agree with you on the point of Amy Winehouse. I don't exactly think she made the best choices but I have no idea what addiciton is like. Perhaps for her it was impossible to quit, perhaps it was a constant struggle. We really don't know how things were in her mind.

I forgot about Dio. Holy Diver is an amazing album. He was without a doubt a legendary figure, but the work of Big Star, Sparklehorse and Jay Reatard was amongst my favourites so when they all passed away in such succession I was quite shocked. So those three will always stand out for me.

I knew some people who actually broke into tears when they found out about Westlife. It's quite tragic. I pity these people for having absolutely no taste in music whatsoever.

I hope you have a good year too man, I still have another year before I have to worry about uni properly but it's just the feeling of impending doom that is getting to me!

Haha thanks man. great to get some good feedback. I always knew we liked a lot of the same stuff, what with us having the same favourite band. Prowler in the Yard is their best by far, if you liked Phantom Limb and Terrifyer you should check it out for sure. I'm not a huge Grindcore fan either, in fact I am pretty sure the five or so bands I do enjoy are the most famous. Envy are a brilliant act, they're definetly top of my post rock list because they manage to keep it interesting with the more heavy, hardcore elements. I knew you were a ****ed Up fan from your other posts around the forum, I really feel they outdone themselves with David Comes to Life though. They've gone from a great modern punk band to THE great modern punk band in my opinion. It really hit me this year and I think I have probably listened to it more than nay other album. I will definetly check out Touche Amore and get back to you on that. It seems quite interesting from RYM so I am very excited to give it a spin.

Aidan Moffat and Bill Wells - Everything's Getting Older
http://www.thelineofbestfit.com/wp-c...Bill-Wells.jpg
This album has been blowing me away on every listen for the last few weeks. A real hidden gem, Everything's Getting Older hasn't recieved much attention but it deserves a lot more recognition. Aidan Moffat, formerly of Arab Strap, bares his soul through his lyrics delivered in a raw, honest voice flavoured with that Glaswegian accent I know so well. Moffat looks back on his life and reflects on topics such as past relationships, his childhood, the birth of his own kids and of course the titular notion that he is ageing a little too fast. This is all set to the beautiful instrumentation of Bill Wells, a name I am not too familiar with but will look out for in the future. The styles and tones of the songs are quite varied - ranging from the short and upbeat A Short Song to the Moon through the intense Dinner Time which has an extreme Noir feel to it, passing by the devastating The Copper Top before finally reaching the beautiful and hopeful The Greatest Story Ever Told. Tying together the wider themes of the album, exploring age and bringing forth the birth of his son. Revealing that no matter how old he gets, his son still has his whole life ahead of him. Life goes on. He also released a f*cking awesome christmas EP, giving a more realistic and cynical view of the holiday season. The man is truly amazing.
