Dead City Emily: Marissa Nadler ('14)

Emptiness is a vast ocean in which the apathetic drown!

Do you ever wonder what being the last person on earth would feel like? Disbelief, anguish, agony, and helplessness; Topped off with rouge waves of despair, I imagine it's much like being the only person left hanging on in a relationship that's long since ended... The opening chords of the song, immediately transport you to this place, of torture, and agony, and as soon as Marissa Nadler's spectral voice, begins to sing, everything and everyone around you disappears, and you are alone, completely alone...Left to contemplate the darkest parts of your soul, and long for the days when things were the way they used to... The melody of the song, is haunting, and smokey, much like the ash after an atomic blast, thick and rich. The echo's,feed back, and reverb are perfectly placed, creating a beautifully haunting psychedelic folk song... This song has definitely made it in the running for best folk song 2014, and the year hasn't even really started so if this is any indicator of how folk is going to go this year, then I am so excited I can hardly stand it...

Enjoy!

Escondido: Rodeo Queen ('12)

Dust clouds in your rear view mirror, tumbleweeds to your left, and the border right in front of you... For anyone ever that has thought about buying a horse, and shotgun and moseying off into the sunset, this song definitely needs to be on your playlist...It has the perfect combination, of horns, smooth Spanish guitar rhythms, and vocals that strangely resemble Neko Case. I am shocked that I missed this record two years ago, because it is dynamite...In the mood for southern style, indie/ country/alt rock? Look no further, Escondido has everything you seek, dust, heat, and Santa Ana winds... Enjoy it kiddies, and send me a post card from Mexico ;)

unfortunately I can only find y'all the live version, and I must say it's really not bad at all, but to get the full effect which was described, studio version all the way...

Still Corners: The Trip ('13)

"Bless the Lord O my soul and all that is within me...." (Psalm 103.)

Every time I hear this song I am reminded of that bible verse, and it wrecks me... Headphones my friends are the only way to take this beautiful dream pop journey. This tune has all the ingredients necessary to create a masterpiece. One part luminescent female vocals, one part bittersweet lyrics, and two parts dreamy synthesizer... If ever there was a way into my soul it would be through the synthesizer, it is consistently able to penetrate the walls I so careful build around myself, and leave me shattered into a 100,00 pieces on the floor. But I guess you have to be into that sort thing then don't you. I spend countless hours, seated in the giant tea cup chair in my living room, letting music find it's way into me. Maybe it's because I want to fix what's wrong inside. Maybe it's because, it's the only way I have ever heard myself think, really heard myself think. In the this life my connections with people, are so few and far between, because I learned at a young age everyone dies, and I learned at an older age that you will die too..So, whenever the hurt got to be to much, I'd strap on the headphones, and go to a place where no one ever let me down.... I dunno, maybe I think to much, but I don't know any other way to be..

Well that's about enough of that! (See this song has a tendency to bring this out of me....)

Enjoy....

Secret Cities: The Park ('11)

My first love in life is and will always be psychedelia! I'll take it anyway I can get it, in folk, in garage, in pop, in rock, in rap! So it always surprises me, when I miss something that is soo deliciously sinful.....

Look at that album cover, I mean ****! It look's like Dr Suess's wet dream for godsakes, this album has to be good! Right, Right?
Well I have yet to listen to the entire thing, so I dunno what to tell you, haha! I keep getting stuck on the third track which is The Park... It's one of those songs that at first listen, sorta makes you tilt your head and ruffle your eyebrows, you are definitely not sure what you are hearing, is this good or is this bad? And as the song continues you find yourself starting to like it... By the 10th listen you realize the sheer brilliance of the song itself...Simple, easy, clear cut 60's era psychedelia done brilliantly......

It reminds me of every carousel I have ever been on, every piece of cotton candy I have ever tasted, every set of giant swings, and definitely reminds me of every mid summer evening I have ever spent at the carnival.... Now I am no detective, but I think that was the idea. Secret Cities completely captured every single emotion that embodies those memories, and they did it flawlessly! Making this a definite staple in my psych library!

"Buy the ticket, take the ride"......

Dominant Legs:Hoop of Love('11)

Ok listen, I have a really really vicious sweet tooth, when it comes to pop music, especially indie pop! There is nothing I love more, then being completely elated and almost giddy, from poppy disciples bouncing around my brain....

For those of you who don't know Dominant Legs are the side gig, of former Girls member Ryan Lynch, so that right there, makes me sit back and say, "**** yeah" I'll give it a spin.... Oh sweet Jesus!! What have I done? I have hit the mother load of 80's sounding bubble gummy awesomeness, that's what I have done!!!

My very first impression of this song was who gave Fleetwood Mac steroids? And as the album progressed I started to believe, that maybe this was the love child of Fleetwood Mac and The Talking Heads, (but never you mind that right now.) I wish I could break this down for you mechanically and tell you about all the little idiosyncrasies that make it a pop masterpiece, but as I don't hear music that way at all, I can't. I hear it as a whole. When I was younger I was preliminary focused on lyrics, but the older I got, and the more acid I dropped, and the more time I spent curled up in front of speakers that go way way way past 11, the more appreciation I gained for a song as a whole. And Hoop of Love definitely has everything in it to make it as addictive, if not more so then crack... I feel a lot of time with pop songs they loose their staying power, but the ones that don't, are the ones that have "just sumthing about 'em".... And this is one of those songs. There is just sumthin about it, I dunno if it's the harmonies, that are placed righteously through out the song, or the jangle of the gitaur, the super upbeat tempo. Regardless, of what the reasons are, I ****ing love it! I hope you do too......

Great stuff Roxy! Good to see you getting into the journal method. :D I also like the fact that you've put so much into this in so short a time. Often people have the idea to begin a journal and hit up an entry then do nothing for weeks or even forget all about it. You really seem to have some sort of plan here, or if not, the universe is shaping your journal for you without you even knowing it ... now how heavy is that??? ;)

Great work girl! Keep it up, as the fossil-fuelled one said....

Oh and I agree with previewing: it's saved me some embarrassing mistakes in the past, and also shown me where some paragraphs need to be cut down, rearranged or even changed altogether. Definitely worth your time doing.

Night Moves: Horses ('12)

Uhhhhhhh........ Yeah I got nothin.... Mostly because I can't decide what ****in planet this melange of country, and space aged indie was born on.
With an album called Colored Emotions it was pretty much a lock that I would dig the **** out of it from start to finish. And I do like the record, it will take a few more listens for me to completely fall in love with it as a whole, but I'll tell you right now I am right in love with Horses...There is so much going on in this song it's pretty mind bending. Let me rephrase that, there is so much going on in the song, and it is able to keep an amazing flow. It's seamless, the howling vocals, the twangy over tones, the drum solo in the middle. I could go on like that for a couple more sentences too, but I won't.... I really honestly just wanted to share this with y'all and here is the best avenue to do it!

So let me shut the **** up and let you listen....

RoxyRollah 03-03-2014 02:53 PM

Side Note: Guys I wear glasses, and smoke copious amounts of ganja! I do preview all my ****, and sometimes the mental gymnastics I have to do to convey my thoughts, to you in a way, you will understand and I and a way,(see I am confusing myself already) I miss **** sometimes and don't notice till days later. Eh, what are you gonna do? I just assume, y'all indeed do have more sense then God gave cabbage and you can figure out what I mean... But you know what they say about assume.. ;)
