If this album disappoints you, you have every right to chop my dick off and feed it to the hounds. I'm giving you this opportunity.

pg.lost - Versus (2016)

My most anticipated album release for 2016 is finally available for streaming, and I've given it a proper listen. Let me tell you right off the bad that this may be one of the most crisp albums in their collection so far. When I first heard the news that we'd be getting a new pg.lost album this year, I was already stoked. Had no idea what to expect especially considering the amount of love I have for their 2012 release, Key. This one definitely did not disappoint in any form.

While Versus is it's own album, they do a few throwbacks here and there where you hear the pg.lost we've come to know and love, while still managing to keep things fresh and new. There's a reason this band is my favorite post-rock band and it's because every time they release something, they're consistent. They keep things fresh, they keep things new, and they try new things. I've not ever heard a pg.lost album I didn't like, and this one is certainly up there.

Now, considering I've already chosen my album of the year for this year, I don't really know where I would put this album. I'll play it safe by saying that this falls in my top 3 alongside Radiohead and The Pineapple Thief. Each album in my top 3 are in their own caliber of greatness, so it's hard to decide which is better. I would say that if anything, my top 3 consist of my album of the year, and two follow up albums of the year, just to ensure that people realize that I love each album fully.

In relation to their other work however, I really don't know where I'd put this album right now. I still have a love for Key and I listen to it almost non-stop still to this day, and I feel like Versus has the potential to be of that same caliber, if not more-so. It's certainly been able to grab me on my first listen, so I imagine that with every listen after this point, the album will only get better and better.

If it's not clear right now, I absolutely love this album. I've been waiting for it all year, and I'm so glad they decided to stream it two days early, because I don't know what I would have done had I not been able to listen to it soon. It's certainly worth your attention if you want to hear some post-rock done right.

Will give it a go later. It's a full moon tonight, which explains the full-on **** mode I've been subjecting people to all day. Hopefully the post-rock will balance this bitch.

Post-rock can definitely help.

Given that Chelsea's problems are involved with the moon, I think space rock is more appropriate.

Devin Townsend Project - Transcendence (2016)

This came as a huge surprise because for one, I didn't know DTP was releasing something new. The last I heard from Devin Townsend is that he was taking a hiatus after Z2 and Sky Blue but lo and behold, we got a new album. Believe me, I'm not complaining. I love being surprised with new albums, especially new albums by artists that I absolutely love. But you're here to read my thoughts on the album aren't you? Well, read onwards.

We've seen Devin Townsend challenge himself with what he can do, as is evident in Epicloud, and Casualties of Cool, and then his solo stuff on top of that. He's mastered the craft of whatever he decides to do. So when it came to Transcendence, I had very high expectations, and upon first listen, those expectations were met. Whether or not they were exceeded will be decided upon further listens, but right now, I have high hopes that this album will make it into my top 5 for the entire year.

If you're looking to get into this album and aren't exactly sure what to expect, just go in with two things in mind: One, an open mind. Devin Townsend tries some weird **** in his music and it's best to give yourself the best opportunity to appreciate a genius at work. Two, think what would happen if he took the best parts of his early work with Ocean Machine and the like, and mixed it together with his newish stuff in Epicloud and Deconstruction. Granted, I know Deconstruction was more on the heavy side, but the production value is what I'm focusing on, and whoever mixed and produced this album did a phenomenal job. Though, that's what you've come to expect from Devin Townsend.

You'd have to look really hard to find a track on this album that you'd hate, because I've yet to find a bad track on it. It's mixed with heavy tracks and slow tracks and it all fits together in such a nice listening experience that you can't possibly find any reason to hate this album. I wasn't incredibly excited about how Z2 came out, so this is nice to get an album that shines.

So as far as further listening and placement on my list. I always have a difficult time doing this especially with how many albums are on my top 10, but this will hopefully be in my top 5. My top 3 cannot be changed, because the 3 albums in those spots are some of the highest quality albums I've ever heard. And as for further listening, I think I'm going to be giving this album quite a few listens until I get tired of hearing it. Basically the same thing I did with Epicloud, which I still listen to from time to time. This is such a high quality album, and I want to enjoy the amount of high quality that it has to offer as many times as I can.

Very happy this was released, and Devin, you've done it again. You've succeeded and you continue to blow my mind.

And on that note, Higher is a ****ing masterpiece of a song. Wow.

Explosions In The Sky - The Wilderness (2016)

It's hard to believe that we're already moving into the month of October, and new music keeps coming out. Explosions In The Sky sort of caught me by surprise, because for one, I've never really heavily been into them, or at least I've not really been into them recently. Lately however, I've been diving into them more, and it was convenient to see that The Wilderness had been released, because it gave me another reason to listen to them.

So, as far as the album goes, I'd say it's your run of the mill standard post-rock with Explosions In The Sky adding their own little schtick to it as they seem to do a lot in their music. For this album, they did keep the first half of the album sort of a build up, reaching the middle opening up with some bangers that make the wait worth it. The nice thing about the build up is that it's not boring by any means. Sometimes when you hear post-rock, you get a lot of boredom and similarity throughout the entire album, but each track has its own thing that makes them unique and keeps you intrigued for the amount of time that the tracks play on.

On that same topic, there really doesn't seem to be any dragging on. The length of the tracks are carefully laid out, and done so in the way that brings you into an experience and not just an album, much like most post-rock can do, or attempt to do and sometimes fail. But each track is great, I don't have any complains about the lengths or how the tracks progress after one another.

I don't know if this will fall anywhere in my top 5 for this year, but perhaps in my top 10, if anything doesn't blow me away for the rest of the year, which I highly doubt. It's a great album and I've listened to it twice now, and I plan to listen to it two or three more times until I place it somewhere on my 2016 list. It's certainly enjoyable if its got nothing else going for it.
