Machine+: A Barren Land of Ego Induced Rants and Musical Appreciation
Hi this is Jacob/Machine/the ****ing loser who keeps leaving MB, reporting back into journal land for the umpteenth time. This time the goal in mind is trying to maintain an actual... thing that doesn't just meander off into inanity over time, but instead takes shape from the amorphous blob it must inevitably must start as, as do all endeavors I take a part in. In this mess of a journal I plan to go into a bit of detail about some personal matters, however meaningless, music (occasionally mine, usually others), movies, etc. until I find some sort of ground that interests me the most to write about. So bear with me here, I am at the very least rusty.
Updates for this journal will begin sporadically, whenever I am feeling particularly inspired to do so, but I do hope to eventually start some sort of schedule I can easily maintain with not being painstaking. So no promises of reviewing an album a day or anything ridiculous like that (yeah I'm looking at you Machine you little piece of ****, taking on more than your laziness allows for). P.S: If anyone wants to give me some album recommendations just PM me. I was thinking of doing a round up at the end of each week, writing a couple sentences about maybe 5-10 albums I've never heard before. So if anyone is interested in taking part of that, I'd appreciate it. P.P.S: Should I start up my knock off Love/Hate thread again? I'd most definitely be willing to if people would read it, or else I'm not putting in the effort |
Welcome back man.

Your choice. If it were me, I'd listen to all of them and post a lazy two sentence review of the leftovers from the other thread.

A Short Review of Every Album I Have Heard This Year Part 1
142 Views by Drake Worthless save for Hotline Bling (taken from my rym) 141 Death of a Bachelor by Panic! at the Disco When he's trying to be Sinatra this album works and has some great moments, but unfortunately for the majority of it he's doing an impression of the last Fall Out Boy album. (taken from my rym) 140 Bubblebath by That Poppy Okay yeah I get it she's supposed to be this satire on pop music or something, but the music itself is really outdated sounding, it doesn't really have an impact. 139 Painting With by Animal Collective My biggest problem with every new-era AnCo album I've heard is the production it's so grating and claustrophobic that everything sounds muddled; the songs themselves on this are boring for the most part, but nothing offensive. (taken from my rym) 138 Freshly Squeezed by Limes Probably the most inoffensive bland thing I've heard all year. 137 Is the Is Are by DIIV OH MY GOD THIS IS SO BORING (taken from my rym) 136 Not to Disappear by Daughter See the DIIV album (taken from my rym) 135 Vroom Vroom by Charli XCX The parts that sound like SOPHIE are great, but the Charli XCX-ish moments suck balls. (taken from my rym) 134 life by jinsang Another inoffensive background music, Nujabes worshipping, soundcloud beat tape. 133 Cognitive Dissonance by R-ODD かなしい I mean yeah it's vaportrap. (taken from my rym) 132 I'm Up by Young Thug I've never been a huge Young Thug fan outside of a couple songs and the last Slime Season mixtape, this is dreadfully boring, and the songs just don't stand out from one another in any meaningful way. (taken from my rym) 131 The Ship by Brian Eno Sounds like the new Roly Porter. No really. That's it. Except like, not as good. (taken from my rym) 130 MEGA by Blank Banshee The hype for this one was a lot better than the actual release. Besides the one track with the weird vocal samples I can't remember a single moment off this thing. 129 Preoccupations by Preoccupations It's like the Viet Cong album, but without the pesky problem of being memorable in any way. 128 New Introductory Lectures on the System of Transcendental Qabala by Kel Valhaal Not really good, but also interesting and underrated. If that makes sense. 127 "Awaken, My Love!" by Childish Gambino The front half of this album is some of the best stuff I've heard all year. The back half starts with California and that's all I'm gonna say. 126 RTJ3 by Run the Jewels A great album for college kids who are super into politics and woke enough to see that Damon Turnip is a ****ing fascist. (idontactualthinkpeoplewholikethisarelameijustdont likeit) 125 Stage Four by Touché Amoré Lyric driven albums usually aren't my thing unless the melodies that go along with them are great, or it's rap. This is neither of those things. 124 Coloring Book by Chance the Rapper Jesus that first track is bad, like **** what were they thinking. After that it gets a lot better, but it's still way too inconsistent. (taken from my rym) 123 The Catastrophist by Tortoise It's good yeah, but it doesn't scratch that Toroise itch at all and leaves me blue balled, I'll just go listen to TNT again. (taken from my rym) 122 Promise Everything by Basement Emo band makes generic 90's sounding emo music, cool. Good thing the songs don't totally blow. (taken from my rym) 121 Slime Season 3 by Young Thug Like I said before this is the only project by Young Thug that I've really found of any value. There are some legit highlights on this mixtape. (taken from my rym) 120 Sleepline by New Dreams Ltd. It's so disjointed and soooo long, I just really don't have enough patience for this, I'll just wait for the next Vektroid album. (taken from my rym) 119 The Serenity of Suffering by Korn Best thing the band has done in 20 years. Now that isn't saying much... buuut it is pretty alright mainstream metal. 118 Deep Dive Deep Web by Quiz MVE Oh post-internet, you were fun while you lasted, and you sparked a great conspiracy that is still quite mysterious even now. This album really isn't that great, but it's more the concept behind it and the fact that it basically created a genre of internet field recordings that makes this one fun. (taken from my rym) |
It's weird how all these albums have sequentially descending numbers at the front of their titles.

I don't understand why he just didn't post the link to his RYM list cause this is just word for word and I've read it like 5 times already.

The Not So Weekly Album Wrap Up (Christmas 2016 edition)
https://img.discogs.com/sc7-8LICqlnn...32761.jpeg.jpg Starting things off with Feikn's only demo tape Visse Ting Som Hænder. Possibly the greatest thing I've heard out of delving into black metal since Weakling's album. Filled with these crazy melodic, yet dark, blackened guitar lines and vocals that go between harsh and manic to clean and almost feminine. Its short runtime goes toward its benefit as well; once ideas are presented the band doesn't decide to stretch them out to the point where they are uninteresting, but instead they move on to another riff or musical passage. The folk interludes are also worth mentioning, when the band goes through these folk sections it doesn't feel forced; in fact, it almost feels like a folk band decided to make black metal, but couldn't resist the temptation to show off their chops a little bit. Overall, it's an amazing demo tape that I highly recommend to everyone. 9/10 https://s3.amazonaws.com/hiphopdx-pr...ls-620x620.jpg Alright so I know a few of you all wanted me to expand on my thoughts about this album, but the problem is I don't really have many. The album breezed by barely making an impression on me; I only remember that I was getting really really bored and thought the album went on maybe 25 minutes too long for it's own good. The opening track was great and so was Call To Tinkerton or whatever it's called, but beyond that I either can't remember literally anything and in some cases thought the album was just bad. The production is almost generic sounding sometimes and the lyrics are too cringe inducing too really take seriously. It's just an album that fails to meet my expectations of a good hip hop on any front. I really don't have any interest to go back and listen again either. 5/10 http://cdn4.pitchfork.com/albums/236...e.a59e667f.jpg This is one Frown recommend me a week or so ago, and having heard his music a couple times I was really excited to hear it. I was not disappointed by any means. The lush beautiful textures are almost... dare I say it, vaporwave-esque, or at least incredibly influenced by hypnogogic pop music. The blending of these droned out pop sensibilities put through the filter or context of a noise album is really something to behold. There are twists and turns I never really expected the EP to make and I came out of it with anew EP of the year. 8/10 That's all for now. I may do a couple more for this week later on. |
The Not So Weekly Album Wrap Up (New Years 2017)
Well it's been a long year, for me it meant applying for colleges (which I really need to finish, I've been slacking), getting a job, getting a car and a laptop, listening to a lot of music, and finally recording my first huge project. So here we are Donald Trump presidency and all ready to start all over again. Anyways here's my thought on some albums I've listened to recently. Spoiler for vektor:

I CANNOT RETRACT, I AM APATHETIC AT BEST: A TRACK BY TRACK ANALYSIS
PART 1: I CANNOT RETRACT The moment I wrote this song, I knew it would be the opener. It . wasn't the first song I wrote after Love Over Mind And Body, but it was the first to really send me down a rabbit hole of sound and ideas. It had a certain reserved energy to it that just felt like something big was about to happen. Little did I know it wouldn't be another year and a half before the project was ready to be released, yet it persisted in my mind as the only logical intro to the album. The song itself is more or less a mission statement to everything the album sets out to be, and hopefully... is. Originally I wanted it to be this near melodramatic piece about apathy and death, ya know typical 16 year old existential pretentious incoherence, and while it does retain some of these characteristics the final product is something a little bit darker; however the melody itself, especially in the second half, contradicts this feeling of unease and fuzz with the most "epic" or "glorious" sounding chord progression I could come up with in my tiny brain. The end result is something between bedroom pop "woe is me" and a triumphant march towards victory. While this makes for a shocking shift in tone I think this works towards the songs benefit. It doesn't just sulk, it finds a solution. Something of a light to grasp onto at the end of a long tunnel interspersed with red herrings. I don't want to ramble on for too long about each track so I'll end it here. 25 DAYS |
