Need Help finding this band

i remember this song i like it was called "The letter" i think..

the song was like a funky R&B song, i don't remember the name of the band but i think they were black

i kinda remember the opening lyrics, they went

"Give me a ticket for the aeroplane
Ain't got time to see the fast lane
all my days are gone, imma coming home
My baby, she send me a letter"

can't vouch for the accuracy of the lyrics, Any help would be appreciated

LOL it didn't ever occur to me, i went straight to youtube but couldn't find it

The Box Tops are ok but Alex Chilton did his best stuff with Big Star. You should check them out.

Is it sad that when I think of the song, I think of the parody cover "Vanna Pick Me a Letter"? That was quite popular in the late 80's when I was in junior high. I hate sometimes that the first exposure to some songs end up being parodies. I can blame Weird Al for that.
