I need help with choosing pa equipment!

I'm starting to play in average sized bars and restaurants; based on the research I've done I'm going to need a mic, amp, speaker(s),a mixer, and the stands of course. My price range is around 500$. I saw some packages on ebay that include everything I listed and the brands are peavey, hollinger, and phonic. If anyone has any input on which direction I should go I'd appreciate it. Also, if you really think that I could drastically improve the quality of my purchase with maybe 1 or 2 hundred more dollars let me know what I could get, or what brand would make a huge difference in sound. Thanks!!!
