Help with a disco era song!

So way back in the day, when I was a kid....:D there was this disco song that I've always heard, even these days occasionally. Every time I hear it, which is fairly scarce these days, they never say who it is and when you try to look it up on line, such as playlists from that station, it's a dead end. Honestly, if I had a smart phone or the mic worked on my computer, I'd try one of the many song recognition web sites, but this isn't an option for me, and it's driving me crazy!!!

So here's what I do know..........

It starts out with a rather subdued ringing of notes, as in bells ringing, much like a door bell. The succession of 4 notes starts out at a modest pace then the next 4 notes repeat but in half the time. I don't know any other way to put the notes so here we go....

.................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .....
.Ding............... ..ding.............. ...ding........ding. .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... ...................
............ding.... .................... ............ding.... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... ...........
.................... ................ding .................... ......ding.......... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... ...........
.................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .....
.................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .................... .....

The song has singers harmonizing throughout the song, occasionally doing the following chorus.....

.................... .................... ............ .................... ...........
.................... .................... .................... .................... .................
.................... ..................... EWWW!!!............. .................
.................... .................... .................... .................... ..................
.................... .................. .................... .................... ...............
.................... ......EW............ .................... .................... ..............
.................... ............EW........ .................... .................... .................
...................E W................... .................... .................... ...............
.................... .................... .................... .................... .................
.............EW..... .................... .................... .................... ...............

mid point the song breaks into a guitar riff that goes very quickly and with reverb....... .deet deettle lee deet, deet dettle lee deet, deet deettle lee deet....... then drops an octave, then does it again........ then drops another octave and does it again and so on for several successions

:o: If anyone could please help me get in touch with my youth, so it doesn't feel like I'm just dreaming this song, I'd so much appreciate that!

again, my guess is not a complete match for your description, but the intro melody (your ding dings) somehow reminded me of the melody from a great song from dragon ball that I heard as a child, by japanese band Field of view

I was so hopeful, but it wasn't it. I'll keep plugging away on this. Thank you for the input though!

perhaps you could record the melody with online piano and share the file on the forum. Have a link Recordable Virtual Piano - Flash | ActiveDen

There's no way it would be this easy, but is it The Hustle?

Excellent selection! I'm all too familiar with Van McCoy, and while I absolutely love that song, that is not it, but thank you so much nonetheless!

Okay, this will take me awhile, but I'll get it and put it on.....

dwill123 10-27-2015 06:51 PM

A long shot but the only one I can think of with bells in the beginning.

Excellent song but that's not it either. The bell notes to the song I'm looking for I'm almost certain are done on a synth, despite the fact that the notes sound crystal clear (in my head anyways lol) I say this because they really are like small bells, having an even higher pitch, and more subdued than in the Chic song. There is the possibility that this is not a disco song as I had thought, but could be pop or funk. I'm 48 years old so my recollection of the 1970s is pretty grainy.

So, the keyboard is really limited as to the range and, admittedly, I suck at having a musical ear, but I just can't get a high enough note to replicate the very high pitched bell notes I speak of. I really do appreciate everyone's input. I'm still trying to unearth more info from my brain!:banghead:

p310 10-28-2015 05:38 AM

there are plenty other ways, mobile apps, pc apps, It's just about getting the precise notes and tempo so we can hear it.

Stephen 10-28-2015 04:22 PM

Lol. Best name-that-tune OP ever.

Sorry it doesn't ring any bells.

Any recollections as far as lyrics? Male/female vocalist? General theme.

Well, yes, you got me there! :shycouch:Male, but I cannot recall on the chorus singers. I really do wish I could remember any lyrics whatsoever, but I just cannot pull anything out of it after all this time. I'll continue to see if I can put down the notes for you all to listen to. I know we've all heard it and as soon as you heard a snip of it, you guys would nail it!;)

I'm going to try the chorus line I put up, on the keyboard. Perhaps I can duplicate that!

Music in a bottle 10-28-2015 08:29 PM

Well, one things for sure, I absolutely suck beyond your wildest imagination when it comes to playing the piano. I just simply cannot locate any notes that even sound like what I'm looking for. I went to musipedia and tried filling in the little squares with my mouse but all it plays is the first note, then none of the rest. I tried the piano key board but it just doesn't go high enough, nor does there appear to be the range to even duplicate the rythem. The ringing notes I outlined, I try to play but it doesn't sound right at all. AGH! I'll keep trying......

The Batlord 10-28-2015 08:38 PM

This must be one damn good song.

Well, that's probably debatable but it sure is driving me bat****. Any musicians in the house? So here's my problem........

The chart of ringing notes I put up in my original post? Well it's no wonder you guys can't nail it. I went to musipedia to their flash piano, and when I hit one note, then try to drop the next note by hitting two keys down, it's too little a jump, three keys down is too much! I need to get a microphone and plug it into my puter, straight up!.

Stephen 10-29-2015 04:17 PM

The deet deetle eet bit reminded me of Rapper's Delight but that didn't have a bell... or ewws.

Umm we're not talking Anita Ward Ring My Bell are we?

Music in a bottle 10-29-2015 05:59 PM

I looked it up, but no dice. Someone did toss this one up there..... and if it began with a bell instead of a stringed instrument and several octaves (notes) higher, it'd be as close as I've ever seen to date in my search.

grindy 10-29-2015 06:01 PM

Just a heads up:

Well that was unexpected. This isn't some weird mind game is it lol?

As far as vocals you said male. Can you narrow it down? Falsetto, baritone.. did the vocals have a big part or was it more instrumental?

No, I'm real! Just trying anything I can think of in the absence of hard core facts for the song. I'm certain that someone will nail it!:D

It has vocals throughout, especially the chorus lines. I believe that there is more than one vocalist in this song and the voices would be between falsetto and a baritone (unsure what that would be called) That song I just put up, the beginning is as close as I've heard yet to the beginning of my song. I did get another microphone and it's my computer that isn't picking it up that well, though both attempts were done with identicle pairs of ear buds.

p310 10-30-2015 03:18 AM

Could it be a Boney M song?

Okay, now what's this? I saw the video come up and thought I was good to go. So what else did I need to do Grindy?

Music in a bottle 10-31-2015 03:29 PM

Okay Grindy, (big breath) here I go again....... :)

Everyone else, the bell notes I first mentioned are along the same octave as the beginning notes of this song........ I hope this helps jog a memory!

Music in a bottle 11-07-2015 08:02 PM

Well heck, I'm beginning to wonder if I heard this song in a dream! Something about Jim Beam that affects reality!

I've gone through every single song list (top 100) from 1970 through 1983, under the genres of disco, pop, funk, popular, etc etc. How disheartening.

Maybe I'll do a single of it and put it on the radio!:thumb:

Is it the Amityville Frenzy per chance?

Music in a bottle 11-12-2015 07:47 PM

I hate to say it, but that's not it either, but I so appreciate the suggestions you folks. Typically, I'm really good at figuring out what a song is, but this one has severely stumped me and it's so disheartening!

Music in a bottle 11-13-2015 11:46 PM

My apologies! Sometimes, my memory is kinda like AM radio..... very faint and staticky one minute, then crystal clear the next. As it turns out, I had the chorus line a bit off, so this is more like the way it would be........

Well, after dozens upon dozens, maybe even hundreds of hours of searching and wasting my time, and much to my delight I'm proud to announce that I finally figured this one out........ It was Thank you all for your help and now my sanity has been restored. For only being 10 years old when this came out, I'd say I have a fantastic memory huh? :dj:

Hmmm groovy, the songs got Venus Flytrap's fingerprints all over it. Hadn't heard that one before, cheers.

Stephen 11-23-2015 01:57 AM

Thanks for reporting back. Glad you found it.
