Who sang this song (linked) likely called “Mother, Mother”? (not Tracy Bonham)

About 16 years ago, as a kid, through a curious conjunction of being a player of the computer games Thief (designers were members of the now defunct Tribe, commemorated at tribe.stevelatham.net), Deus Ex (project lead Warren Spector cited Tribe as his favorite band, as it has become mine), and Tomb Raider (Tracy Bonham’s “Behind Every Good Woman” was used for a trailer), I discovered the Ectophile’s Guide to Good Music.

As a result, I ended up trying to hunt down Bonham’s other stuff, file by file, using Kazaa Lite. Searching for “Mother Mother” (unsuccessfully, as it turned out; years later I was able to find and buy the album, which I still have in a box somewhere), I found this song instead, bearing the same name but no relation to Bonham’s:

For years I have been trying to identify it, with no success.

If they’ll help, here are the lyrics:

Code:

Mother, Mother, the things you did not teach me—
the things I learned only through watching you—
Mother, Mother, the things you did not teach me
were the very things that hold the greatest worth.

I learned your kindness when you opened up your arms,
your gentleness when I was doing wrong—
I learned your quiet strength when the world came down on you hard.

Mother, Mother, the things you did not teach me—
the things I learned only through watching you—
Mother, Mother, the things you did not teach me
were the very things that mean the most to me.

I learned to laugh at myself when it’s clear I’ve played the fool,
your sermon in small <gains? things?> when there was no one <unintelligible> left to <view?>—
learned about our God when you lived what you believed.

Mother, Mother, the things you did not teach me—
the things I learned only through watching you—
Mother, Mother, the things you did not teach me
were the very things that hold the greatest worth.

Mother, Mother, the things you did not teach me—
the things I learned only through watching you—
Mother, Mother, the things you did not teach me
were the very things that mean the most to me, yeah, they mean the most to me.
Yeah, they mean the most to me.
You know they mean the most to me.
Yeah, they mean the most to me.

Does anybody have any leads that might help me track down the identity of this song? I ended up liking it better than any of Tracy Bonham’s other stuff, and I would love to follow up on anything else done by the artist, whoever she is.

Okay, so that was unexpected. Because this is my first post, I couldn’t just post a link to the song in my kiwi6 account; instead I had to upload it as a blank video to YouTube.

And YouTube just notified me that an automatic copyright claim was made against the music in the video: it’s the track “Mother, Mother” from the album Trip The Light Fantastic, by a band of the same name.

Crazy. Sixteen years I’ve been searching for this, and now the antispam rule leads me there by an extremely roundabout way. So I guess I owe you all a big thank-you!
