I didn't enjoy this record tremendously. I found it tiresome getting towards the end. I mean, there was no doubting that the ideas and music generally were decent, but an enjoyable listen? Far from.

I also found the vocals excruciatingly difficult to stomach. Sounded like Alvin and the bloody Chipmonks.

I haven't tried to make it all the way through this album, but I've listened to a couple songs off it and they were pretty good.

GravitySlips 01-28-2008 06:11 AM

Good album, but their EPs were better.

Rainard Jalen 04-29-2008 04:44 PM

Another tragic latter-half-of-decade misfire. Why anybody would be listening to this when they could be listening to something really damn good like say, Neu! or Can, I have no idea whatsoever. Sure as hell beats me.

Finally heard this a few weeks ago.

I think I would best describe it solid , if not unspectacular.

I don't understand the hype over it and I don't really understand the hate either. This is got average written all over it.

Average. There. The key word I'd been searching for. There is nothing in the slightest awe-inspiring about this record. I can't attribute finding this album amazing to anything aside from not having had much of a broad listening experience.

And boo boo I'm not "comparing every prog band ever to Can", I didn't even realize that was some sort of cliche. I was just pointing out that it seems odd to be raving over something plainly mediocre like this when there is such more remarkable stuff to be listening to.

Thank pitchfork for both.

I had a feeling that name would pop up sooner or later.

Well. Because for one Battles don't sound like Can, so why make the comparison?

I also find it annoying when someone dosen't like something so they tell people who do like it what they "should" be listening to instead.

"Hey AC/DC sux listen to Belle & Sebastian instead"

You could certainly see why thats annoying right?

GravitySlips 04-30-2008 05:07 PM

indeed, Battles are not anything like Can whatsoever.

I shall not lie, I've grown to really like this album. It's a bit patchy in places, but there's some amazing moments...and the drummer is outstanding.

Holy crap. I really love this album. Having heard this I have to vote excellent. I wouldn't call these guys completely original though, and let me explain why.

Does anyone else notice the similarities between these guys and Gentle Giant? I mean seriously, they sound just like them at times.

Thats not discrediting them or anything, no one has ever tried to sound like Gentle Giant before.

cardboard adolescent 05-15-2008 11:29 PM

like a much less organic version of gentle giant.

they're both hit or miss groups for me.

boo boo 05-15-2008 11:37 PM

Gentle Giant are one of my favorite bands ever. And one of the most unique and underrated bands of the 70s.

simplephysics 08-07-2008 07:44 PM

Listening to it now, I voted Very Good. It could pick itself up in certain places but overall its enjoyable.

Arderocker 08-09-2008 10:31 PM

Talking about this album, I think it IS an amazing outstanding album, but it lacks at the middle. I think the first 7 songs are the most refreshing things I've heard the past year, but the following songs start to sound like repetition. It's a very good album by a very good band and I think they are pretty inovative.

debaserr 09-08-2008 01:38 AM

I voted average. The highlights being Atlas and Tonto. It really lags sometimes though.

4ZZZ 09-08-2008 06:49 AM

I voted average. It has some very good high's and I am glad that I got it. Atlas stands out but some of the other tracks tend to meander.
