I guess this album is good but maybe not so good as a first album.
Try In Absentia and Deadwing.
If you would like these two, than try Lightbulb sun and Stupid Dream.
But don't start with new The Incident, it really isn't good album for beginners.
Albums from 90th are different than albums after 2000.

Hehe, yes, interviews with Steven and Mikael are funny :)
Are you Opeth fan? Than if I remember well, Mikael's favourite albums are Stupid Dream and FOABP.

DiSTANToblivion 02-16-2010 03:27 AM

My favourite PT album followed by Deadwing...

Lightbulb Sun is almost my favourite now though, I can't stop listening to it. But I still go back to Up The Downstair and Voyage 34 almost always. The Incident has a whole new appeal for me after watching them perform it entirely live.

...ah screw it they're all amazing

I have mood for all discography because every album has something interesting and different than other albums :)

My band decided to cover the title track for this weekend's Halloween show. That bit in the middle right after the crazy drum stuff where it gets really heavy and fast is really fun to play.

Petula07 11-02-2010 04:24 PM

Can you show it to us?

One czech band made cover of Fear of a blank Planet too. I would say it's not bad but female singer doesn't fit.

Fantastic album! The Incident was a bit of a let down compared to ...Blank Planet.

I was just browsing for related forum posts for my project research and I happened to discover yours. Thanks for the excellent information!

Yes.

This is from their wikipedia page

Steven Wilson has mentioned that the album's title is a direct reference to the 1990 Public Enemy album, Fear of a Black Planet. He explained that race relations were a major issue when it was released and he sees "coming to terms with information technology and...the 21st century" as a modern issue.

Good album, one of the better progressive albums I think of the last decade.

Chumley 04-28-2011 03:56 PM

Very good. Signify, Stupid Dream, Lightbulb Sun and In Absentia are better albums IMO.

I loathe Dream Theater, and enjoy PC even less. Their sound is manic and jumbled. They come across like failed jazz musicians w/ distortion. I voted awful after my friend raved about this album for months. Atrocious.

One of the best rock albums I've ever heard. The writing and production are fantastic and the rythm section - especially the drummer - is bad-f'ing-ass.

Excellent album, and I have to point out the outstanding guitar solo by Alex Lifeson during "Anesthetize." My PT collection starts with In Absentia, which didn't do much for me, but I really like Deadwing, Fear, and The Incident.

How do Light Bulb Sun and Stupid Dream compare to their more recent releases? Are they closer to In Absentina or Fear. Or, completely different?

I'm new to them as well. I've listened to every album at least twice. Light Bulb Sun and Stupid Dream are, imo, closer to In Absentia than Fear. So far, I feel that Fear is the best of their prog-metal period. Of their earlier psychedelic work, my favorites are The Sky Moves Sideways and Signify.

I'm not a big Porcupine Tree fan, but I must say that this album is amazing. There can be only two track for me - title one and Anethetize - which can made an every album excellent, but the rest tracks are also very vero good. Good job Mr Wilson!

bob_32_116 03-31-2016 01:08 PM

Excellent album. This is probably the one album which, when I was introduced to it, was responsible for rekindling my passion for progressive rock, after many years of thinking it had run its course and that no one was producing anything interesting anymore.

Since then, of course, I have discovered a whole progressive scene of which I had been unaware.

monglae 05-02-2016 08:11 AM

This is definitely one of their best work. The songs fear of the blank planet and anesthesize really serves the culmination of their creativity, nuance, and attention to details
