It's definitely an interesting album, which is good. After a few listens, I've begun to appreciate it more. It's got a very trippy, experimental feel to it (which I like in hip hop). It's not catchy or (even enjoyable during the first couple listens), but it's definitely growing on me and I'm really enjoying it now. It's not necessarily the most easily likable album ever, and I think that's why there are so many mixed feelings about it.
I'm not sure what kind of music your into, but the album's trip hop feel does it for me.

I think you can call it a fail, but I don't think the general opinion is that it's a piece of shit. It's definitely a lot different and confusing to a typical Gorillaz fan, but it isn't something to toss out the window right away. I agree that there's a lot of unnecessary filler from Albarn, but I appreciated the gems here, especially "Some Kind Of Nature" because who doesn't love hearing Lou Reed's voice? It's very much a grower. Barely anything in the way of catchy pop singles but it's experimental edge still makes it interesting for me, that and its a music hall of fame in itself. It must be said it isn't a patch on the other albums though

I'm glad I'm not the only one defending this album. Albarn has always been the kind of guy to experiment and not stay put, even with Blur. In fact, I love him when he is at his most experimental. A lot of people bashed Think Tank, but it is one of my favorite Blur albums. To some, he failed in his attempt to keep Gorillaz moving, but to me he succeeded in many of the songs on Plastic Beach.

The album wasn't originally supposed to be a Gorillaz album if that helps explain the shift in sound and the excess of guests. Personally, I think it's a brilliant album. I do not understand how it's getting such a negative reaction.

It get's worse the more I listen to. Hardly any good tracks actually. Rhinestone Eyes, Superfast Jellyfish, Melancholy Hill. The tracks with Lou Reed and the Clash...Ugh, they are bad for those great artists.

Interesting that it's had what seems to be a generally negative reaction which I'd but down to the fact that it is an album that unfolds with extended listening, something most people don't really bother to do anymore in the age of the mp3 and the Recycle Bin.

You'll find that's not really the case in this forum. In fact, if you read through the posts in this thread most people gave it several listens before they decided it wasn't to their liking.

I wouldn't call it one of the best of the year, but I do enjoy it.

i rated it 'very good'. i've been a huge fan of damon albarn's since the blur days and i loved 'the good, the bad and the queen' and the soundtrack to 'ravenous' but i was kind of meh on gorillaz until this album. it's the first one i've actually bothered to buy and really got into and the first one where the whole cartoon gimmick didn't overshadow the actual music. it doesn't live up to what i consider his best work (namely 'parklife', 'think tank', 'the good, the bad and the queen' and 'ravenous') but it's up there.

I'm a pretty loyal fan, but honestly I feel disappointed. I rushed to listen to the album when it was first release, and after my first listen I was shocked that I could barely remember any standout songs, or really.....anything I wanted to listen to again, at all. After several other listens the result was the same. I've had the album in my music folder for well over a month now and have not touched it since. I hope they'll redeem themselves whenever they come out with their next.
