Amplifier-The Octopus(2010)

Amplifier from Manchester, England released a double disc last year clocking in at two hours. The band could be given many tags.Progressive psychedelic/space rock, alternative and stoner rock would be probably be the best to describe the sound of the band. How would you rate the album on a scale of 10?

A really great album that sounds better with every listen. It's sprawling and ambitious but they somehow manage to pull it off. It could even be as good as their debut, time will tell.

I am just downloading it now, quite excited if I am honest. Have never heard this band before but the description of 'Progressive psychedelic/space rock, alternative and stoner rock' above is really exciting me!

Excellent 8

A massive music exploration. The Octopus takes influences from so many bands from alot of genres and pull it off. From Porcupine Tree, Ozric Tentacles, Pink Floyd on the psych/space rock side of the moon to Alice In Chains and Sonic Youth from the grunge scene to stoner metal via Black Sabbath by the way of King Crimson on the prog side to the post rock sound of thier fellow Manchester band mates Oceansize.

At two hours long it's a daunting task to digest this album and takes more than four or five listens to somewhat grasp all the different dimensions from this music. IMO, if the time was cut back to say...90 to 100 minutes as it will probably lose alot of listeners after that "standard" CD length runs past its "average" play length. Has to be one of the best prog releases of 2010. The band just released a four song EP that has left over tracks from The Octopus sessions.

Its pretty good and doesn't feel as long as it is which can only be a good thing.
