Blackfield
They're a collaboration between Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree and an Israeli pop star. What do you tihnk?
|
I've never heard of them.
|
That's why you download the link...It's pointless to post in a thread to say "never heard of them".
|
I still have'nt got round to checking this stuff out.

I voted "Like Them".
Really love the second album, but not so much the first. If Blackfield II were the only release I would have voted "Love Them". |
Like them: Epidemic is an awesome track. The first album is just as good as II imo, although it's less immediate.
|
A brief description of the band:
Imagine if Steve Wilson remade Deadwing, but replace the Metal influence with Pop. I've always wondered what it would sound like if Wilson made a pure pop album considering what an incredibly talented producer he is and this answered my question. Blackfield II is much better than the debut because it's more accesible and that's what Wilson set out to do with this project and he sounds akward and forced a lot of the time on Blackfield. None of that on their brilliant follow-up. |
I kinda like them.
Blackfield I was better imo...or atleast i found it to be better. Their music gets boring after a while, but definitely a good listen at the start. Just a poppy version of later PT, minus the progressive aspect.(Not completely, but most of it) |
The first Blackfield album bored the pants off me TBH. I have'nt heard II but I am in no hurry.
|
II isn't getting all that better then.
More or less the same thing...Mellow pop-rock. I guess some ppl who enjoy simple strait forward pop music would like this, but it's just a bit bland and boring for me. I'll give it another go later...wasn't all that bad on first listen. Re listening it made me kinda sleepy last time. |
I really enjoy Blackfield, but out of Steven Wilson's various projects, they would definitely rank behind Porcupine Tree and No-Man. I would probably listen to them before I would fire up Bass Communion and IEM. Either way, there are some great melodic Rock songs to be found on those two albums.

I admit I love Blackfield - they were for me first step to music of S. Wilson. Now I can say Porcupine Tree are much more better and somehow I don't like live album of Blackfield, there is something weird in their live sound... Blackfield II is better than Blackfield I but both albums have some songs which make me feel "Yes, it's nice music." Cloudy now, End of the world, Epidemic and This Killer are my favourite. Sometimes I really need some easier music, for example before sleeping and Lullaby is ideal lullaby :D |
Interview about Blackfield II and (small) differences between I and II
|
I heard a few of their songs on Myspace, and i'm not sure if i like them.
Which is their most accesible album? |

If you aren't against pop-rock, you could try it. They have only two albums - Blackfield I and Blackfield II. Blackfield II is better so try this album. In my opinion it has some really good melodies. But it depends what you expect... If you need some complicated music, you won't like it. If you like easy melancholic music, it's ok. This is my favourite song from Blackfield II and second favourite by them in general. And here is preview of Blackfield II |
I'll give it ago. Usually pop-rock isn't very enjoyable...usually a bit bland for me. But SW created PT, so I'll trust him with this one.
|
Well, you can trust him but... this is NOT Porcupine Tree, it's very different.
He loves ABBA and in some interview he said he is interested also in nice pop-rock melodies. Blackfield is probably the result of ABBA influence together with influence of Aviv Geffen :) |
After the first listen I'm...indifferent on this. But I have a feeling this will grow on me.
|
Maybe... or maybe not :D
But after first listening of End of the world I had a feeling... Oh my, what is it??! And now I love it :D But I know it's because I like pop-rock and easy melodies. |
