I must confess one crime. I'm a sucker for naive & corny sappy ballads. My favourite may be Here There Everywhere by the Beatles. McCartney's sappy stuff really gets me moving. But is there any problems with so called sappiness when it's accompanied by great melody?

Plus I take honest sappiness over that lets-be-so-smart-that-nobody-can-accuse-us-for-being-naive-or-dumb-attitude any day. Nothing wrong with it if you can do it adequately but if you can't, you should not even try. What's wrong with love songs anyway?

Yazoo - "Only You"

Only one other person in this thread has mentioned this song (back in 2008), and I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned more, because I remember how popular the song was in the '80s, when it struck me as soon as I heard it because the mood of the song was so sweetly plaintive.

I actually think I remember the first time I heard the song: I was standing alone in a dark room with a radio on a windowsill at night, when the song came on. I stood still to listen to it and admire the mood it created.

I thought it was sung by a man! I didn't realize until recently that the singer is a woman with a rich, low voice.

Martina McBride - I Love You

This is such a pretty, sweet song that despite its gushing simplicity, I can't help but like it. And gosh darn it, the song is just so catchy!
