Best New Romantic?
Duran Duran are hailed as the best of the New Romantics.
Or is it Culture Club or Adam and his Ants? Who is you favourite New Romantic? |
Adam And The Ants
But only because they were once a decent post punk band. |

Post articulately, or fuck off! Spammers aren't welcome here! |
I reckon it was adam.
I reckon he started the craze with the style and make up. |
Steve Strange started it

But guess who rejected adam from punk and told him to wear the get up he wore??? I know, I am going to be lynched online but honestly it is true. Malcolm. I swear it is true. You walked into that one Urban!!! But steve strange does have a weak claim. |
Rejected him from punk?
 What happened was none of the stuff Westwood & McLaren did with him was working & they were dropped from their record label. So he got a new band & started fresh. McLaren had absolutly zero to do with the Adam & The Ants that became successful. And I think you'll find Steve Strange had EVERYTHING to do with the start of the new romantics considering anybody who was anybody in that scene came from his Blitz club |

Ah ha ha. Do you buy them in $2 bookshops? Urban you are wrong on so many facts. Maybe you read websites made by people in Korea!! Maclaren told him to f off and told him to wear these clothes vivian was making and he did. I know the songs etc were his though. Steve Strange could have played a hand in the beginning like creating a few flyers and getting a premises. I see what you mean, he did play a role in the movement. But Adam probably made others do it too. I mean, duran duran proably saw him n tele and thought okay guys, lets ditch this and do this instead. Urban you are fast becoming the musical equivilant of George Bush. i don't doubt your beliefs but your info is really poor in research. |
Maybe you should do your research
Mclaren took Adam's entire band & formed Bow Wow Wow leaving him on his own. He rebuilt the band , started a new direction & signed to CBS. If you are just going to make stupid jokes to anyone who disagrees with you then why are you even here to debate anything. It's not like you accept others might have a point. |
You do have a point urban.
I am only messing. Was steve strange the svengali who started all that movement where s ballet played in London? I know you are right I was just saying that lots of people run clubs but not all movements become nationwide. Adam made the journos brand it and magazines look for a name etc. Do you see? I am only been funny don't take it too seriously. You are right about strange but adam did make it nationwide when he burst on the scene. He is the first pop star I remember in my life. Everyone as kids done prince charming dance. then came culture club and duran duran. But the best I think is Adam. |
Learn some punctuation. I thought mine was bad...
|
I don't , believe, in, violence!
|
adam for sure. but his post punk stuff is where its at!
and Bow Wow Wow's first album is a goody. it's a shame Mclaren took the band from adam. would have liked ot have seen where it would have gone. |
Always had a soft spot for Japan and Sylvian had a touch of the Bryan Ferry's about him.
Love this record; |
I have'nt heard that for years!
|
Thats a great song.
I only have Gentlemen Take Polaroids by them. I've been trying to find some of their early stuff when they were more Bowie/ New York Dolls influenced. |

Edit: Have you heard the Dalis Car album with Peter Murphy and Mick Karn? |
Same thing with the Human League.
Their first 2 albums practically invented synth pop. Then they split up & got those 2 girls in the band. |
Dalis Car - 'His Box' from the Waking Hour album. Karn was a brilliant and under rated bassist. Shame him and Murphy didn't do more. |
I've seen the name around several times before but didn't know who was involved or what they sounded like.
That's not bad I might have to look further. |
if we're talking New Wave i agree on Adam and Bow Wow Wow with their ridiculous tribal cacophony. Adam Ant may have been a bit ridiculous (working his way through pirate, highwayman, kinght in shining armour) but he was the embodiment of pop icon.
It's all about the Associates' album 'Sulk' for me though... Billy Mackenzie's voice, seemingly an improvisational free element working without the confines of the music, the lyrics - 'Tore my hair out from the roots/Planted them in someone's garden' - eww |
Adam! Adam Ant was so versatile to go from art-rock/post-punk roots to become a glammy, glitzy, camp Bolan/Bowie influecned song and dance man.

I always have laugh at how London always takes the plaudits for movements in the UK.
For example there was a burgeoning scene in Glasgow that started in approx 1976 that was New Romantic in everything but name. The scene even had its own local bands like the Cuban Heels. The followers of this scene were merely known as “Posers” and had a liking for (at that time) what was considered outlandish clothes. In Glasgow this was, what you might call, a high risk lifestyle choice as even just wearing skin tight trousers (as opposed to the fashion of the time, flares) often saw you subjected to violence. London always gets the kudos because it’s the main area for the media in the UK. That’s why past scenes dominated by Liverpool, Manchester, and even Glasgow (to a lesser extent in the early 80’s) have always annoyed the self centered, vainglorious, media whores of the UK’s South East. As always, once the media packaged, branded and spat out a London scene as “New Romantic” and it getting picked up by the middle classes, it had already died out in other parts of the UK. |

Anyway I don't think London quite claims credit for everything in pop culture... off the top of my head, Merseybeat? Almost all the best 60's beat and pop groups were ex-captiol - the Hollies, Zombies, Beatles, rah rah... They just all had to go to London to get noticed in the first place :D All the best 70's/80's bands were Lancashire/ Cheshire too, I think that's pretty acknowledged. These days there aren't any regional scenes kicking off because of the internet and the media seemingly not giving a f*ck anyway, it's really boring. You never know where bands are from |

We were asked not to come back after a riot at our third gig when we refused to play roll over lay down, the Status Quo number. When I mentioned Liverpool, it was obviously with Merseybeat in mind. Irrespective of where bands came from, they couldn't make it until they went to London. |

Maybe I should have added "for example" to the scenes I named. :bonkhead: |
