Hmm, I actually don't think Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is his greatest work. I think much of that has to do with how many times I've heard the singles over the years; the album comes off as disjointed and a bit dull when I've heard its tracks in so many different contexts over the years. I'd probably just pick one track off of this for a compilation, especially given how familiar everyone is with it anyways.

I definitely think GBYBR is his best work, great double album with no filler and lots of variety.

I'd say I need a refresher course on Elton. A week to listen to his peak 70's work and I'd be ready to contribute. I just threw out 'Funeral for a Friend' since it's one of those songs that doesn't get much airplay and it's really good. It takes the epic scope that many of his songs have, and just extends it over 7 minutes.

His first great song is Skyline Pigeon in my opinion.

I don't know if GBYBR is his best work or not, but with tracks like this one I think its certainly got merit.
