Pianogirl75- RE your posted list- you have some good selections there. You like KT Tunstall that much? Has she had more than one studio album? I hadn't heard of her before the breakthrough.
She's had two studio albums, Eye to the Telescope and Drastic Fantastic, as well as one acoustic album. She won the BRIT award for best female solo artist besides and about 3 other European awards. Black Horse and the Cherry Tree was nominated for a grammy, but didn't get it. I know she's new on the scene, but I feel that time will tell that she is one of the best.

That's right- I do now recall the second album being released (to lesser fanfare). "Black Horse..." was a decent track, as was "Suddently I See." I'm kinda surprised that "Black Horse..." didn't garner any notable amount of acclaim(check acclaimedmusic.net, which compiles critics/industry lists). I don't hold much faith in the Grammys as a major source of acclaim, based on its history of awarding safe, middle-of-the-road, non-threatening acts. It's gottne better, but lots to compensate for over the years.

jackhammer- my post was not spam to advertise my blog (I could do that in my signature after all). Naturally, I'd like people to engage in discussion on the matter, otherwise I wouldn't write about it. Furthermore, "Best Female Singer/Vocalist" is different than "Favorite Female Musical Act." Like I said, my favorites aren ot necessarily who I think are the best singers/artists, whatnot- and I'd think others share that.

You can't advertise in your sig either.

i'm rather partial to trip-hop, so my picks are as follows:

Skye Edwards of Morcheeba

Dido for her solo stuff and her work with Faithless

Tracey Thorn of Everything But the Girl and on the mind-blowing song Protection from Massive Attack (didn't really care for her solo stuff though...)

Shara Nelson who also worked a bit with Massive Attack (Unfinished Sympathy, Safe From Harm)

Elizabeth Fraser more vocals for Massive Attack (Teardrop)

Costanza Francavilla who worked with Tricky on his album Vulnerable

and of course the many talented vocalists who have worked with Zero 7

but my absolute favorite has to be:

Geike Arnaert of Hooverphonic, who recently left the band (:() but is now recording solo stuff (:))

also worth mentioning for their unusual (yet still beautiful) voices are:

Alison Shaw of Cranes

Melora Creager of Rasputina

and last but not least, the wonderfully talented Björk Guðmundsdóttir :)

Very good link. Add Martina Topley Bird to that list (she has also worked with Tricky). The Cranes are fantastic.

Alison Shaw (Cranes) , Annie Hardy (Giant Drag), Belinda Butcher (My Bloody Valentine), Victoria Legrand (Beach House) just to name a few..

Alison Shaws voice is gorgeous. The Cranes should be much bigger than they are.

Definately, her voice is so beautiful and haunting. First time I heard Starblood I had goosebumbs.

Missy Higgins, Annie Hardy, and Regina Spektor are all amazing. I really need to listen to more of their work.

Actually, Giant Drag is releasing an EP in the near future.
