Gotye
I know he's been talked about around the site, but I couldn't find a thread for him anywhere.
An indie act from Australia, his real name is Wouter De Backer and his music is pretty eclectic IMO. He's mostly indie rock, but uses electronic elements in some of his songs, and you might catch a little world music feel here and there. You should check him out now! yo dude...this is good stuff. Thanks!
|
I like what ive heard of Boardface but i think i need to give it a proper listen sometime.
|
This song is huge right now, I actually kind of enjoy it.
One of the best mainstream songs of the year so far. |
Nobody cared about him till "somebody that i used to know". now hes huge, and thrashed over here on commercial radio. kind of like kings of leon before "sex on fire".
|
Somebody that I used to know is an overrated song, it's not bad, just overplayed as someone said above. The album is great though!

Gotye
Goyte
Gotye is an Australian artist who's popularlity has exploded since the release of the song Somebody That I Used To Know, which has 99 million views on Youtube. " Belgian born Wally De Backer is Gotye. He has adopted Australia as his home and it's certainly not unlike us Aussies to claim him for ourselves! An incredible artist, he has the ability to play many musical instruments to an extraordinary level while mixing and producing his own music at home. With the combination of his music and talented vocal ability, the results are songs that reflect styles and sounds of the past, but demonstrate a distinctly contemporary outlook. Since his teenage years in Australia, Gotye has been playing music for good sized crowds, often in underage gigs around Melbourne. As he developed his musical talent, this alternative artist started to gain popularity through radio station Triple J. His first single Learnalilgivinanlovin was released in August 2006. Since then he's never looked back. '' Taken From the album ''Boardface'' (2008) I absolutely love him and think he brings real musical talent into his work. This is real pop. Here are some more of his songs for you to check out. This video made me cry, as much as I tried not too. |
Here is my new favourite, his music and vocals sound so like Radiohead.

Checking out Making Mirrors due to the reputation it's gained, I was very happy with what I got. Quite weird and out there but also innovative and eclectic. And also a perfect piece of "indie" tinged pop in Somebody I Used to Know.

Gotye
I think Gotye is a beast! His most known song (somebody that i used to know) is good in my opinion, but I hate that they added a beat to it and that they play it ALL THE TIME. What is your opinion of Gotye?
|
Like Drawing Blood shows a lot of potential but shows even more inconsistency. Making Mirrors still doesn't knwo what style to pick but does it better IMO, especially because the songs are less dragging and therefor easier to ge tinto. Dont'get me wrong, I lvoe long songs, but on LDB they seemed dragging.
I'm also personally a fan of his electronic songs, especially those off Making Mirrors. I love the groovy dub in this one, the autotune takes time to get used to but I love the way this song builds up. One dark-ass song, especially wiht that video clip. E: Oh, I'd also rather put this thread in the indie & alternative corner, one does not simply consider Gotye merely pop. |

I'm a big fan of Making Mirrors. Most of the songs are very different, which is awesome. In Your Light is a perfect song for the summer, and then I Feel Better sounds like it could have been made 20-30 years ago. State of the Art is probably one of the weirdest on the album, but I've decided I like it the more I've listened to it, the verse vocals are weird, but I like the chorus harmony.
Check out Learnalilgivinanlovin from his earlier album Like Drawing Blood, it's kind of like I Feel Better. I'm excited to see where he goes from here. |

I believe it was Lateralus who sent me a link to his 2006 album a couple years ago. I listened to it in full today for the first time in awhile. Damn good. It's a shame people didn't take notice until his recent hit.
