There are some pretty good harmonies on Pet Sounds. I can't really think of any Beatles songs where they are harmonizing with different vocal parts - which is what stands out to me from Pet Sounds - but I'm sure there are some.

Crosby, Stills and Nash (with or without Young) have some great harmonies. Their harmonies have always stood out to me.

She's Leaving Home is the only one I can really think of and comparing that to what is in Pet Sounds would be ridiculous.

Beach Boys may win the vocal harmony battle but there's more to music than vocal harmonies, so I'll still stick with the Beatles.

As will I! I'm gonna give the Beach Boys a real chance though. I'd like to round myself out a little more instead of just becoming a Beatles fanboy.

I've tried doing the same thing but I just can't get into them that much. One of the few songs I enjoy is "God only knows".

Then again my posts aren't considered that much here, so who gives a ****.

There were definitely a lot of throwbacks to 50's R&B, Soul, etc., which I would guess is Brian Wilson's attempt to return to innocence amidst his difficulties. I'm not too familiar with any specific groups, but the harmonies are clearly drawing from that 50's Spector sound. However, i think the songwriting is a little more complex in most cases, such as God Only Knows.

^^I've learnt some songs off Pet Sounds

Brian uses pretty bizarre chord structures, mostly classically based

Both a-mazing bands but Beatles go down in history.

Oh sweet!

Yeah, It's definitely in the sound; it is credited as the root of the whole "Baroque Pop" scene i hear of these days.
