Sexy music videos

Hello Everyone!
I need a big favour if you could all help would be great :D

So basically I'm writing an article for my university magazine about sexualisation in music videos.

So the question I would love you to help out answering is: Do music videos in todays culture go to far compared with the 80's, is the use of sexulisation within today's pop stars just part of the 21st century? Does it make videos more interesting?

Any comments or opinions great or small are greatly welcomed and appreciatated!:D Thanks again! xx

It's all relative.

They're certainly more explicit. I don't think it's more shocking to modern audiences then what 80's videos were to their respective audience.

Of course I enjoy it, but if your clinging on to archaic ideas of modesty or religion or whatever i can see it being a frightening time.

I do think subject matter has gotten pretty...lazy lately. Or at least more obvious. Songs about ass are blowing up mainstream media, i don't know how you enjoy songs that simple without the accompanying music video, like I certainly couldn't just listen to a song where the chorus is literally "ass ass ass ass" for enjoyment, or while walking my dog or something.

There's already a thread about it: http://www.musicbanter.com/general-m...ic-videos.html

Twenty first century pop music videos are far more sexualised than they were in the 80s. The biggest factor behind this is commercial imperative and the need to make profit. It is a product of manufactured music.

A few months ago I sat down and watched a video countdown after a couple years of abstaining from popular music television, and I was pretty disgusted by the content of most of the videos. I don't think it's any worse than it was a year ago, but after you've removed yourself from that kind of content, it's a bit of a shock to the system.

I'm pretty conservative about sexuality too though, so that probably didn't help. I can't begin to think of what will be acceptable in another ten years.

Well, we live in the porno age. I mean, in the 70s and 80s only guys in brown overcoats, and sunglasses would dare step into a porno store.

Thanks to the Internet, porn is everywhere, and porn is free. Music videos are trying to be controversial? pathetic! Go on the Internet, and you can find videos of people disemboweling others with hammers.

Link?

Seriously, I think the better question is whether sexualization makes videos more interesting. I'd say no, not unless it's a new, extreme form of sexualization. It's possible that plots can be more interesting if sexual activity is left out of them, more room for other things in just those few minutes. For some reason, I'm thinking of "Hazard," by Richard Marx. Look at the thread about music videos with storylines.

He is not going to link to that. It is a clear violation of our rules. It will be deleted. Also, you're pretty bloody sick for asking.

Pretty sure he was joking.

Last year someone linked to a series of webcam photos of someone committing suicide. The admins sent a request to pull it down. After that there was someone asking for the links in PM. It happens.

sopsych 11-11-2011 11:17 AM

It was a joke. I don't actually want to see that, and I doubt it exists (unless it uses trick editing).

It exists, unfortunately, and if you'd heard of the tor network, you wouldn't even be surprised.

To be perfectly honest, almost any pop video these days has some element of sex. Take your pick.

TheNiceGuy 11-16-2011 01:21 AM

I've never had a big interest in music videos unless they either told a story or they showed the band playing. As for having sex dominated videos I think it really shows a lack of real creativity, as it's almost the norm in mainstream music videos to have a sexual theme of some sort. I think they should be pushing creative boundaries with music videos and seeing what they can come up with rather than producing more commercially safe but less original sexual ones to be honest.

Salami 11-16-2011 02:35 PM

Well, since he wants some examples:
Go to 0:38 for the explicit stuff. May I warn you that the song is horrible....

Isn't the first question "What is considered sexy?"

I'd say in the 80's people like Madonna did this porno thing already, sex sells.

Now everybody knows sex sells it's a bit passe but accepted.

I would say Aguillera, and Britney had a Porn off with outfits a few years ago, now Rhianna is into it and so these are just the big mainstreams and the rest follow in time.

Things like Hannah Montanna (Miley Cyrus)- Walt Disney - has always promoted the sexualisation of children.

If you showed your ankle and went on the street at the beggining of the 1900's you'd probably be told you'd be raped.

But yes I think your conclusion for your essay should be a YES because the mainstream companies promote their top stars in fishnets, camel toe leatards, heavy makeup and wiggly butt busting rap belly dances just slap flesh across our tired TV sets.

Lady Ga Ga (huge kiddy fanbase) used to be a stripper. Qualified for the job!

It's actually a Jewish agenda as most of the American media is run by them, and no i'm not anti wotever it is, but i am totally against the sexualisation of children in society and promoting sexuality to youngsters, infants etc.

The spice girls did this really well. Was it really 'Girl Power'?

Then again I love Indie bands that get old grannys to perform their songs. Maybe that's sick too.

Sorry!!! Where's that come from? This is a music forum, not a political one!
For all that, I was interested in what you'd wrote up until that point. I think you were a bit narrow minded about the historical aspect, though. You have a reasonable point about the whole music industry marketing the sex side more than the music. Bieber is being promoted all over the place: on one site I saw a banner ad saying "could you be Justin's dream girl? Find out now!" This is obviously wrong: teenage girls are going to start trying to change their personality to try and appeal to someone they'll never meet.

In the 80s, the music videos were more suggestive sexually. Fun. "Lets get physical", "Sweet Emotion" to name a few. For the last probably 15 years, it has been stepped up big time. Especially in Rap/Hip Hop and RNB. Even with all the skin flashing, music videos to me, are not sexy.

Janszoon 12-10-2011 02:20 PM

You want sexy? Look no further:

Basically agree with this. There's very little sexually arousing about people jiggling across my screen in a soft filter.

I also despise the portrait that anyone objecting to sex as portrayed in many modern music videos is 'hung up,' 'religious' or 'outdated.' The representation of sex that most vidoes play with is a very patriarchal, backwards and exploitative one. It's possible to make a sexy, modern music video that's sex-positive without being skeazy and exploitative, I wish that it would happen.

Hmm. Two sexy Rihanna videos. Damn, I feel somewhat horny mentioning these two songs.
