1.
2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Just fill in the blanks and tell us why you picked each band! |
Pop is a pretty vague term. Maybe you could be more specific and tell us your choices.
Also....why 9 instead of 10? |

We'll let me start off with the ABC's of real Pop, not that Lady Gaga and Justin Beiber crap.
|
Iggy Pop perhaps his name.......I actually found him to be a for runner to "punk " and hard rock then pop.
|
I think there are:
1.Beach Boys 2.ABBA 3.Beatles 4.Dusty Springfield 5.Bay City Rollers 6.Spice girl 7.Prefab Sprout 8.Squeeze 9.Electric Light Orchestra |
The Sprout really really really? and the Squeeze really out of all those band floating around out there?
|
1. Beatles
2. Beach Boys 3. Bee Gees 4. Elton John 5. Everly Brothers 6. The Supremes 7. Simon & Garfunkel 8. Madonna 9. ABBA |
I'll just go by my nine favorites, and not really worry about claiming any of these are the best. Because I highly doubt they are.
9. John Howard (I really think his pop sensibilities are right up there with the Brian Wilsons of the world. Really love his stuff.) 8. Kenny Loggins ('80s Loggins is my jam. I do like his folk/Americana stuff, too...and I also feel my inexplicable love for all that is Kenny Loggins has come up on quite a few occasions.) 7.) Fleetwood Mac (I really, really like Fleetwood Mac's 1970s output. And I think Lindsey Buckingham kind of sounded badass on their 1997 live album, The Dance.) 6.) Paul Williams (You know Paul Williams songs. I promise you, you do.) 5.) Simon & Garfunkel (I dig the hell outta some Simon and Garfunkel.) 4.) Savage Garden (I grew up in the nineties.) 3.) Elton John (Sir Elton is an artist I've played in my car and never been met with any objections whatsoever. I've been met with elaborate, off-key sing-a-longs.) 2.) The Beach Boys (They just sound like happy to me.) 1.) Michael Jackson (Yeah, I really like listening to Michael Jackson. He definitely had a lot of cheese in his arsenal, but his perfectionism crafted, oh, you know, the best-selling album of all time. By a long shot.) |
In no particular order...
The Shangri-Las Martha and the Vandellas The Supremes The Shirelles The Beach Boys The Mamas & the Papas The Turtles Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazelwood The Rascals I picked these 9 because they are the bands I usually enjoy listening to when I'm in the mood for some pop music. I love The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Animals (3 bands previously mentioned by several others) but I've always considered them to be more rock than pop. |
1. Beatles
2. Bee Gees 3. ABBA 4. Bucks Fizz 5. Simon & Garfunkel 6. Carpenters 7. Electric Light Orchestra 8. Wham! 9. Duran Duran. |

Notice how the thread slowly warped into lists that include solo artists. I'm kind of strict when it comes to favorites lists. If anything, I'm thinking of this in terms of pure pop bands, without regular backing musicians and not pop-rock. That leaves very few long-lived, successful bands from the last few decades, which says something about how the industry and musicians operate. I don't even have 9 bands to list yet.
