Are you talking about before or after his castrato surgical procedure?

Up until 1986, he had a high tenor voice and also used a famous falsetto. After having surgery on his throat in 1986, his voice range lowered to baritone and lost his falsetto.

I've always thought that Elton John has a rather plain, average voice, not particularly powerful or beautiful, but his really makes the most of it, and squeezes every available nuance of expression out of it using his strong will and determination combined with his consummate musicianship, perfect pitch, and stylish clever phrasing.
