When I was a very young lad, like 4, I would listen to this Frankie Avalon album my parents bought called "Whole Lotta Frankie!" This song was on it and it was a fave. From the 50s it is very definitely bubblegum, I don't know why I didn't think of it before. I was indoctrinated into this stuff a lot earlier than I thought.

No bubblegum collection is complete without the Banana Splits especially when they're doing a Joey Levine song. You see, psychedelia was not the invention of acid rock. It was the invention of bubblegum. That's not just me asserting my own feeling. It's true. All the original psychedelic songs were bubblegum songs. As with surf, psychedelia and bubblegum are two facets of the same genre. And I'm not just talking the 60s but going back to the 50s. Listen to Eddie Cochran's gummy 1957 hit "Sittin' in the Balcony" and you will agree that bubblegum started psychedelia.
