I'm from Denmark and I have noticed that Norway and Finland have amazing music scenes. I'd place Sweden a step below and Denmark at last place among the Nordic countries. Danish bands mostly suck. I can't believe that Volbeat and Nephew are currently our most groups.

According to my layman´s knowledge an awful lot of metal bands come from Sweden. But I am no longer into the metal scene - so I wouldn´t know, even though I myself am Swedish and live in a suburb of Stockholm.

Lilja 09-10-2016 01:20 AM

Sweden is the center of metal..though I think most of it gravitates around Gothenberg. But a lot of good metal comes out of Sweden.

And music is pretty much a big export of Sweden, writing it or singing it. Even if you think about Eurovision, Sweden pretty much wins it every year as some Swede is usually involved in the song, whether writing it or singing it.

You mean pop bands?

Danish bands in general. Ok, so that's maybe a bit of an extreme statement, but there really aren't any that I like much.

The whole death-metal sub-genre was corrupted by Gothenburg melodic death metal.

Mercyful Fate is great...

I agree, but I'm thinking more of still active bands. Plus most members of Mercyful fate and Kind Diamond were not Danish. I always forget that King Diamond is actually from Denmark. Both his projects are awesome.

There is still seemingly thousands of traditional death metal bands around, so I don't know about that.

When did melodic death metal happen? Mid-to-late nineties? When death metal was already stale and going nowhere? And how often do true blue death metal bands start sounding like In Flames to make money?

I used the wrong word. Gothenburg melodic d.m. brought shame upon entire death-metal sub-genre.

Why?

Because it isn't death metal. Neither musically, nor aesthetically nor lyrically.

So? I don't listen to much melodic DM, but the fact that they share most of a name and one evolved from the other doesn't in any way affect Death or Suffocation' reputations.

Yes it does. I don't want to listen to any death metal now, after I've learned that it has been in bed with melodic death metal. Ewww...

Are you comparing Swedish to American? Because they were founded on completely different bases of sound and influences. How can that be considered an embarrassment? I think it more like an evolution occurring in different areas.

Just FYI, melodic death metal is not referred to as "Swedish death metal", as "Swedish death metal" is a legit form of real death metal that predates melodic death metal. Mostly from Stockholm.

Basically stuff with that Entombed guitar tone, I assume.

Basically. Entombed, Nihilist, Dismember, Unleashed, Grave, etc.

No, I'm referring to melodic death metal with Göteborg roots. Hence swedish .

But nobody calls that Swedish death metal. Which makes sense, since most melodic death metal doesn't really sound at all like death metal while "Swedish death metal" does.

MicShazam 09-11-2016 01:47 PM

I like both death metal and swedish death metal and Göteborg style melodic death metal and melodic death metal. No genre offended any other genre in my eyes.

Finnish death metal > other forms of Scandinavian death metal

If you had said Finnish metal in general, vs Scandinavian metal in general, I'd still agree. The fins know their metal.

Finnish death metal was definitely the best thing that country ever did.

I like the first and the last of those tracks! Good death metal has properly rumbly bass.

ABBA are not bad. There are a lot of good Scandinavian bands -- I can't think of Sweden without thinking of Norway and Finland, so I have to mention bands from there too.

Norway
Röyksopp

Sweden
Acid House Kings
The Carpet Knights
First Aid Kit
I'm from Barcelona
The Knife

Finland.
Burning Hearts
French Films

@ DriveYourCarDownToTheSea, you should check out I'm from Barcelona if you have already. They sound like an indie band that's been produced by (Pet Sounds era) Brian Wilson.

You can compare melodic death bands At the gates ( Slaughter of the soul ), In Flames ( The Jester Race ) with Swedish band Dismember. America has nothing to do with it.

Considering how much influence Slayer had on At the Gates' guitarwork, by their own admission, I'd say that was far from true. I imagine In Flames took plenty of cues from Iron Maiden and other trad metal bands as well.

That was a nice little tune! I'd say it would more fit in late-60's BB's rather than Pet Sounds era, but I do see the resemblance.

I take your word for it ... you are the resident Beach Boys expert of Music Banter. :p:

I think this song is also Beach Boy-esque ... or maybe ABBA meets Phil Spector.

Acid House Kings "Would you say stop?"

Lilja 10-02-2016 01:29 AM

Has Miriam Bryant made it to US music? She is just so good.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Zara Larsson in this thread. She is very popular now.

What a banger.

Zhanteimi 11-17-2016 04:26 PM

OP, try First Aid Kit and The Tallest Man on Earth while you're at it.

Also, a gander at this list might yield good stuff for you.
