Rate a Britney Spears song "Toxic"
 

I'd give it 4/5 stars.

One of her very best songs. 2/5.

Honestly I never got why it was so dickrode. 3/5

1/5 for subjecting me to partial nudity when I didn't ask for it.

Holy **** yes on "Circus". That's a song I can throw on repeat for twenty minutes and be pleased as a serial killer with a dumb hooker. "Break the Ice" deserved to be a world beater as well.

Nice pick - that's another great one. I'd throw "Gimme More" in the same league - perhaps not a 5/5 but a strong 4/5. Britney had a lot of great singles - it was listening through her whole albums that could be somewhat painful.

Blackout and Femme Fatale were her two classics. Aside from that it's a lot of inconsistency but she still had far more good tracks then most pop stars. And two stone cold classic pop albums is more than you can give the vast majority of radio pop artists.

I could name several pop stars with more consistent discographies. Spear's discography is pitiful.

Except most of them couldn't touch the glory.

I tend to think that's a generous rating. Cher used Autotune in a blatant (read: "artistic") way in "Believe." Britney uses Autotune because she can't sing. Like so many pop stars (and it's getting worse these days), she hides behind modulation, shakes her ass, and sells millions of records.

I think some contemporary pop-stars are good singers, but Britney is barely even average. Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Anne-Marie, Bebe Rexha, Charli XCX, Ariana Grande, Rihanna, Lorde, etc... those and several more can actually sing. As far as I can tell anyway.

I would agree there are several on that list who can sing, at least better than Spears. I also admit I dislike a great deal of pop music, but that's because of the modulation and "performance over quality" mentality.

Britney could be a good singer, if she were trained as such, instead of focusing on being a performer. I think there should be a balance between the two, but today's industry focuses far more on flashy performances, not the quality of the music.

I love a good pop record if the songs are catchy, well written and colorful. Dropping the snobbery about pop was one of the wiser things I managed to do as a young and arrogant music geek. I'll unironically consider Katy Perry's 2017 Witness a very good album. There's probably plenty of auto-tune on it, but pop of that kind concerns itself with different goals than, say, a folk singer record. Artifice is not just allowed, it's almost a goal in some cases.

Who cares if she can sing? It's not opera. Being able to sing doesn't make Mariah Carey any less dreadful. Her voice suits her music and suits it better than 99% of other pop music marionettes.

Actually, I'd much rather listen to Carey. Carey's power ballads are pretty bad, sure, but Britney's are even worse.

Who gives a **** about power ballads? Carey is just dull ****. Britney comes hard with the bangers. Case closed.
