Surfaces

From Wikipedia: Surfaces is an American music group based out of College Station, Texas. It currently consists of vocalists/guitarists Forrest Frank and Colin Padalecki. Their music is a blend of jazz, soul, pop, hip hop, reggae, and calypso. They have released three studio albums. Their first independent studio album, Surf, was released in 2017.

I've included that because they have no dedicated thread. Now that this is out of the way:

I think this song is horse****, but I can't fully articulate why, and I'm hoping someone here can help. There's a very 80's pop vibe here:

Composition-wise, and to some degree the vocal stylings sound like Christopher Cross. I'm fairly confident about that comparison but feel free to push back.

The lyrics seem to exist somewhere at the intersection of Bill Wither's Lean on Me and every marketing-team engineered psuedo-country pop song you can't get the **** away from right now.

But the faux tropical steel drum-like synths here seem to borrow heavily from that vaugely-referenced tropical cruise ship music that was fairly prevalent on 80's pop stations and later in 90s department stores and supermarkets. This is what I can't put my finger on.

Musical Youths Pass The Dutchie is too authentic
Matthew Wilders Break My Stride isn't Bahamian enough to be cited

There's some maybe late 70's smooth-vocaled white guy canon here I can't find. And whoever that ******* is, these guys are apeing him. Can anyone help?
