Camila Cabello

Newest from Cabello. I really like that there's a pop artist out there that implements Latin elements outside of a movement. Both the song and the video grew on me.

Quite good. Not particularly original but nobody is expecting her to push any envelopes.

You're gonna love this singer who goes by J Lo even though her full name is Jennifer Lopez.

Seriously though, there's been a lot of J Lo content on my feeds this week, which reminded me of her one song that's not quite as bad as the others. More importantly, the video is adorable as a showcase of her authentic Bronx chola self.

I thought Chola referred specifically to people of Mexican ethnicitiy.

The usage I'm familiar with from NYC is broader than that. The feminine refers to any Latina who applies loads of makeup and speaks loud, whatever central or southern American country she or her family hail from. Can be derogatory, can be affectionate, usually slightly sexist and patronizing. The masculine, cholo, is a bit like the soft-a n-word, except for Latin guys: more of a term of affection than a racial slur, esp when used within that group, as opposed to by a cracker-ass, mayo-ass white boy like myself.

LA has the whole "cholo culture" phenomenon that dates back several decades ago, and tbh I don't know whether it's specific to Mexicans or not. But in the urban slang of NYC, it pretty much applies to all Latinos.

Oh, that's Ricki from the movie, Gigli. They said that movie was horrible, the worst movie ever made, so I had to watch it. This is her most memorable scene in it when she threatens the chump blasting the radio with ocular liquidation. btw Would you consider Ricki (aka Jennifer Lopez) a "chola" or a "mami chula?"

Someone give that girl an Oscar!

This scene seems like a particularly sad stab at Tatantino dialogue. She was dealt a rotten hand by the script writer and she looks like she knows it.

I think she has acting chops, as shown in Blood and Wine (1996)
