The guy who fixed my boiler has technical ability.
Doesn't mean I want to hear him sing though.

Thats a pretty crappy analogy. Weither someone is skilled at fixing boilers is irrelevant to weither or not he would be a good singer. If someone is skilled at singing, well, then that IS relevant, if the style of music demands a skilled singer.

Pink Floyd

that was a ridiculously easy choice.

Yet i'm still willing to bet boilerman can make better music than Dream Theater.

I think it's incomparable. I'll go for Pink Floyd :)

I wasn't talking about the 'skill' of singing.
My point is that you can be technical in music or in anything else , it makes no bearing on whether what you have to say is of any interest or not.

A handful of chords , a bit of originality & a purpose is all you need at the end of the day.

Returning to the premise of the thread..

When Pink Floyd started their purpose was to blow people's minds

The only purpose I can see in Dream Theater is to write really awful lyrics full of cliches over self indulgent twaddle and bore any non muso's to death.

You're my favourite member on here and all, but come on... that was a bad analogy. :D

By the way, I love the Damo Suzuki avatar. I met him earlier this year while he was touring and got his autograph. I chatted to him for a bit and he asked me for a cigarette. :D

I personally think that Pink Floyd is a better band and I like there music alot better, but Dream Theatre they are very talented and they are very good, but I like Pink Floyd better.

O'Bannion 11-13-2007 07:31 AM

Dream Theater is talented as ****, but they don't hold a candle to the mighty Floyd.
