King Crimson is one of my favourite bands ever, but they're not prog metal (you probably knew that already). As far as influences go, Camel (an equally awesome prog rock band and another of my fav ever) is probably the biggest. In fact, Barclay James Harvest is an influence too.

Anyway... this is mainly straight prog metal. Of course there's prog death like Opeth, prog thrash like Mekong Delta, prog folk like Tyr etc...

Pain of Salvation
Spiral Architect
Ephel Duath
Ayreon
Nevermore
Cynic
Alarum
Devin Townsend
Spastic Ink
Savatage
Dream Theater / LTE
Peccatum
Maudlin of the Well
Symphony X
Sun Caged

Few members are expressing some growing interest in this, thought it might be a good topic for discussion.

What would people suggest to be "staples" of progressive metal?

Yeah but they were also proto metal.

Listen to Larks Tongue in Aspic 2 and tell me it dosen't sound metal, Fripp even said he considered KC to be "metal with a brain".

would it be right to say that between the buried and me and the dillenger escape plan were porgressive?

BTBAM have some prog influences (they did a cover Three of a Perfect Pair) but certainly I wouldn't call them prog.
