Can't Have Prog Without Keyboards: A Discussion

No, I just reply to everything. Can't have prog without keyboards.

Yeah you're right about keyboards because following a genre cliche is so progressive.

ProggyMan 10-07-2007 08:57 PM

That's like saying you shouldn't use an acoustic guitar in folk because it's cliche. Some things are cliche for a reason.

Ever heard of Pete Seeger?

ProggyMan 10-07-2007 09:08 PM

Ever heard of all the thousand's of other folk artists...

Plenty use banjos and ukuleles. In addition to that, folk isn't about being different or progressive. Prog is, hence the name. You're comparing apples to oranges here.

How can this thread possibly be derailed?

sleepy jack 10-07-2007 09:14 PM

I'll split it into a separate thread srry.

Many prog bands use keyboards, but they don't all use keyboards in the same way. Its pretty dumb to call it a cliched genre because of heavy emphasis on a certain instrument. Thats like calling rock cliched for the heavy use of guitar, or folk because of the use of acoustics, or jazz for the use of brass instruments.

The reason prog bands commonly use keyboards is because prog bands like tone variety, and a good synthesizer and a good sampler offer a lot more tone variety than a guitar. Any techno fan will tell you that.

Exactly. Listen to Spirit Of The Radio for keyboardy goodness.
