Ozric Tentacles? Gong? Nektar? Hawkwind? Space Rock?
I know there's a strong following here for such bands.
There's a krautrock thread and a 60s Psych thread. Why not one for space rock/psychedelic(which doesn't fit into either one of those two). Lots of interesting and unknown gems here. I've definitely collected enough to make a compilation. But I'll post one later since my net is pissing me off atm. Anyways, post away with the bands you know. I'll definitely check out all the recs :D I'll start- Hidria Spacefolk - Symbiosis http://www.progarchives.com/progress...0222622005.jpg A very solid modern space-rock band from Finland. Musically, I don't think they are anything new for someone familiar with say Ozric Tentacles, but they definitely do feature everything i love about psychedelic/space rock. Love this album! Has a very middle-eastern kinda sound as well, which works out extremely well. I'm not able to find any tracks from this album anywhere, but anyways this would be a good overview of what they sound like. Track name: Pajas From their second album "Balansia". Hidria Spacefolk - MySpace Note: Symbiosis is a little bit different from this. |
Don't forget about Eloy.
|
Kingston Wall - Kingston Wall 2(1993)
http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/8228.jpg Another band from Finland?! Well, yes. Part 2 of the kingston Wall Trilogy, this one is a bit more on the classic rock side, with a little bit of Rush/Pink Floyd influences. Mainly guitar driven. The vocals were a weak point(on some of the tracks) but that didn't prevent me from listening to this. Must say, has some great melodies and superb guitar work. MySpace.com - Kingston Wall - - Rock / Psychedelic / Progressive - www.myspace.com/kingstonwall |
I will check these bands out sometime but i have so much backlog to get through, I need to cut back for a couple of weeks.
|
Hmmm Rev'd Flasher on EBWF likes Kingston Wall - I still have to check them out.
|
I'm a sort of casual Space Rock fan.
I like my Space Rock to actually sound like it was recorded in space. Really echoey with a pounding bassline & weird noises & very trippy. I don't think that applies to the couple you've posted so far and they wern't really for me they're a bit too proggy/muso for my liking but i'll keep an eye on this thread with interest. |
Well, yeah, your space rock criteria is definitely hard to find.
I guess krautrock satisfies that more. I'll see whether i have something very similar to hawkwind or gong. |
Thinking about it and from what i have, Nektar's Journey to The Centre of The Eye and A Tab in The Ocean might satisfy your criteria.
There's also a band named High Tide who have quite a few similarities, but all i have is a compilation and haven't listened to any actual album of theirs. I still need to dig more deeper. Yes, Gong ftw. They are at least borderline 'psychedelia' for me; often lumped in with the Canterbury scene bands, at least for this concept trilogy of records, but they have a distinct proggy bent. Well I basically just described space rock...
Anyhow this stuff doo-doos on Ozric Tentacles from a great height. I never investigated them outside of these but they still tour with Daevid Allen. Nektar - Journey to The Centre of The Eye
http://s1.subirimagenes.com/otros/pr...rney-to-th.jpg Although their second release, "A Tab in the Ocean" is much more refined, It's more of a prog. rock album with spacey elements. Journey... takes more influences from krautrock. It's a concept album about an astronauts journey in space and half of it is instrumental. Highly layered, dreamy and quite enjoyable. The organ/Mellotron take center stage here. I already posted a track earlier, but anyways, here are more - YouTube - Nektar - prelude_astronauts nightmare YouTube - NEKTAR-JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE EYE YouTube - Nektar — Countenance YouTube - Nektar - warp oversight(track ends at around 4:10) |
Here's a short compilation to get this moving!(It's still almost an hour long though :p:)
Making compilations are a problem as most of the tracks are quite long and many of these sites have an 100 mb upload limit. Anyways, some of it might be an obvious choice, but this is more of an Intro kinda thing. Track Listing - 1. Hawkwind - Brainstorm - I guess they have a strong following here. Essential to say the least. 2. Eloy - Poseidon's Creation - Eloy were one of the lighter bands(most of their later material that is), but they do represent a different side of space-rock as well. Love those vocals! 3. Nektar - Astronauts Nightmare - A British band that took a lot of influences from krautrock. They did change their style as time passed, but their earlier releases definitely had a lot of spacey elements. 4. Ozric Tentacles - Spirals in Hyperspace - Ozric Tentacles are one of those bands where once you get into the groove, It's hard to stop listening. 5. Ash Ra Tempel - Amboss - The most compelling piece of music you'll ever hear. This one is HUGE, but is also 20 minutes long - definitely a challenge to sit through the entire thing. Yeah, It's krautrock alright, but this is just an Intro anyways. Spacerock.rar |
Steve Hillage ex-Gong guitarist produced a very nice series of space/prog albums in the 70's. "Fish Rising" being his most acclaimed, the Todd Rundgren produced "L", followed by "Motivation Radio", and my favorite, "Green" where he uses more synths and gets funky with some Jeff Beck style jams. This was produced by Nick Mason.

Here's a nice little unknown gem, that might Interest some of you -
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA240_.jpg Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come - Journey (1973) Some electronic drum noodling, great use of Mellotron/Synthesizer, awesome guitar work and weird vocals definitely added to it all. Sounds a bit heavy at times as well. Hmm, I'm not sure what I could compare their sound to. But this is definitely trippy weird stuff, that would keep you interested throughout the entire thing! No youtube vids I'm afraid :(. There are other Arthur Brown stuff there(some funny live stuff :p:), but I couldn't find any from this. Well, if any of you need it, I'll be more than happy to share :D. Just give it a listen, out of curiosity. Who knows, you might like it. Edit: Here's an indirect link I found for some of ya.(Do remove if it's against the rules) ... If you need a better bitrate, I'll just up mine. |
Nebula - To the Center
http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/42242.jpg and Dead Meadow would be my recommendations. Echo-y, mysterious, and most of all spacey. |
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...onwoodhill.jpg
Brainticket - Cottonwoodhill (1971) This is possibly the trippiest album ever done. Extreme psychedelia/spaciness mixed with early krautrock; apparantly the band members went crazy for awhile after recording this, so they mellowed down on their next two albums. |
Gong has a lot of albums. What would you say is a good one to start with? I liked the song in the youtube video on the first page, whats that on?

Once you are done with those, you could try 'Camembert Electrique', 'Gazeuse' and 'Expresso II' as well. |
For a thread that's only at two pages, I got a lot of new music from here and it's all good. Thanks Demonoid!

I would especially recommend Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come. It definitely feels different with the repetitive drumming and Mellotron/Synthesizer taking center stage often. Anyways, here's another one if you are interested - http://www.familylosangeles.com/blog...69_-756335.jpg Twink - Think Pink This might be bit of a hard listen to begin with, but it definitely gets better with time. Hmm, lets just say, the UK version of krautrock. There are a couple of tracks where they goof around completely and go totally out of line, and that may reduce it's enjoyability a bit. But other than that, it's definitely a great psychedelic experience :D. Let me know if you can't find it anywhere. Quote:

Some good **** on this thread.. Check out Jane. Like Eloy, they were a 70s Space-Rock progressive band making music in Germany. Good stuff....
youtube them. The songs "daytime" and "spain" are amazing |
http://www.aural-innovations.com/2004/july/psychav1.jpg
Awesome space rock. No youtube. Now that's cool. German. Trippy. B-movie. Linkage? PM. |
^^
Definitely trippy stuff. Think I'll give it another listen now. Haven't listened to it in a while. Kind of dumped this thread sometime back :p:. Anyways, here's another one - Some of those basslines are instantly recognizable (similar to Hawkwind of course) but this has more of a modern sound. Takes you for a journey! It's a bit lengthy, but even the first half should be enough to keep your head spinning. No youtube videos I'm afraid. I'll up it and send it across soon. |
Here are the first four tracks alone, which is around 27~ minutes odd. Should give you a good enough insight on what to expect :).

When you combine some pretty ballzy noise rock and repetitive song structures, you get music from another world! There are only a few crappy quality live youtube stuff available other than this. So, do save your time and go fetch it here. It's all instrumental, but I suspect if bands like these added vocals, it would end up sucking. |
I am pretty sure that space rock goes like this: Psychedelic Rock>Space Rock>Stoner Rock, with Psychedelic Rock being the largest of the three. This is my favorite genre, and its still real hard for me to characterize whats what. There are TONS of great space rock bands, most of which yes are from the German Explosion. If anyone wants anything, or needs pointing in the right direction let me know. In my opinion I feel this music is he modern version of the 60/70's psychedelic movement. Most of these artist main influences were Hendrix and the Beatles, which really shows (less so Beatles). Its real riff driven almost jam band sounding heavy rock-roll.
The most recent I have been listening to are: Colour Haze Nebula Rotor 35007 Brant Bjork Los natas Hypnos 69 Dozer Bros Fatso Jenson Yawning Man SloBurn Atomic Bitchwax Orange Goblin |
Have you listened to Farflung's "A Wound In Eternity"? I think that's the sort of stuff you'd like more.
I'm not a big fan of this 'stoner rock' type of stuff. Yes, many do take influences from the 70s, but I find some of it to be repetitive. Repetition within a song is fine, but when the same riffs appear in just about every other song, I get a bit tired of it. While listening to say, krautrock though, I could certainly distinguish immediately between each song and even remember most of it. |

Ill let you know how the album is. edit: Im so glad you made this thread. |
Great stuff, thanks Demonoid! Gonna listen through the last couple of albums you posted today.
By the way, you should consider doing a space-rock journal. Add a little more info to these albums and you have some solid reviews too .. ;) |
I've only heard one tune by Gong, but I like them.
|
Found a nice (vinyl) copy of Hawkwind's Hall of the Mountain Grill. Pretty good stuff, my first taste of Hawkwind. Sounds like Kantner/Slick's Blows Against the Empire.
|
Hey man, I'm still waiting for that Ozric Tentacles review. ;)
|
Try also Amon Duul II, Kraftwerk (their first album is more spacerock than electronica), Necronomicon (Tips Zum Selbstmord), Arzachel (features Dave Stewart of many Canterbury bands fame, and a 17 year-old Steve Hillage, recording under the name Simon Sarsparilla because he was too young!), and The Doors early albums (SF scene root of spacerock), along with London's Ladbroke Grove - Pretty Things, Deviants, Sam Gopal, Pink Fairies, etc.
Also recommended "Cauldron" by Fifty Foot Hose, Hapshash and the Coloured Coat featuring the Human Host and the Heavy Metal Kids (Art, later Spooky Tooth), and "Messe Pour Le Temps Present" by Pierre Henry. Oh, and "Poem Electronique" by composer Edgard Varese (1958), "Kontakte" by composer Karlheinz Stockhausen (1958) and "Silver Apples of the Moon", by composer Morton Subotnik (1967). |
anyone have a suggestion where to start with Ozric Tentacles? they have a TON of albums, it's overwhelming. i found them while searching for more stuff like Shpongle, which is currently blowing my mind :D
