Yep, my favourite from the 10 on the advanced list (atm) is Samla Mammas Manna's "Måltid", but Bacamarte's might come second. :)

Fixed some links in the original post .. not sure if anyone noticed. :p:

Looking back at it, our beginners albums is a strange but good list I think. In the end, we tried to find albums which were listener-friendly and/or "proggish" so that they could serve as an entry point. For example people who love hard rock might like Wishbone Ash's Argus. It's not what our original list looked like if I remember correctly. At one point it included albums from ELP and King Crimson but these got switched for others.

This thread has got me enthusiastic about prog again, finally checking out 'Argus', classic schtuff. I like the effort you have gone to with the links to streaming examples of the beginner's albums, you'd think that would be common practice on here. And the little soundbytes by the resident prog crew, lovely!

Why thank you! :D

One interesting thing that I hadn't noticed until now is that :

King Crimson and ELP were part of the original beginner's list (simply for being prog staples) but were removed since they were regarded as less accessible. However, the advanced list has been the same all along I think with no revisions. When ELP and King Crimson was shoved out of the beginners list, they could've (should've) had some albums going into the advanced list tbut this didn't happen. :p:

As a result, we have an introduction to prog thread which mentions no KC or ELP albums which is not a big problem, but one we might have to remedy soon :p: KC's debut and ELP's Tarkus definetly deserve mentions I think.

I concur, Tarkus is on the whole more satisfying than Brain Salad; although I have always liked the Larks/Starless/Red era of KC the best, followed closely by the Adrian Belew reformation =P You're right it is criminal not to have any mention of KC in particular, the most idiosyncratic and influential prog group ever?
It would be good if you guys hammered out another list or two between you, though I still have some catching up to do with Advanced one :hphones:

There's a placeholder post which could hold a few more reviews, I might add some KC or ELP to that just to make up for our slightly embarassing mistake. I've already reviewed Tarkus and I too prefer it to Brain Salad Surgery. Not too many like ELP around here I think so if people can sort of agree they should be mentioned, at least I don't think many would dispute that Tarkus would be a good recommendation from them. :p:

It'll be a bit harder to reach a consensus on what KC album should be up there. I personally like the debut and Red the most, but I'll admit I'm not an authority on KC compared to some of the other members here.

I thought the reason we didn't include any King Crimson originally was because they were already really well known/respected by a lot of MB and that we wanted to open up room for more obscure artists?

But hmn...I suppose another Advanced list or a slight expansion to an existing list for the sake of KC and ELP wouldn't be a bad idea now. :tramp:

This is an introduction to prog thread!

Anyways, this is probably my favorite thread on the forums. I had only a handful of prog albums prior to reading this. Please more more more!
