^^And why not write the name of the band and the album under the cover, cause it's not always visible. Some people might want to check it out, which would mean this thread actually serves a purpose.

Where did you see desperate smart-assing? People just like to have fun with Baggs the Prog*masterman. It's amusing.

I think I saw one Pink Floyd Magritte cover actually.

Yeah that Floyd Magritte would be their ****ty Black Hole (or something like that) lp.

With the big eye.

AND....speaking of EYES....

Baggs, do you always refer to yourself in third-person?

EDIT: Is Faust even considered prog rock?

Howard the Duck 04-19-2011 07:48 PM

all I have to say to Bellbow Baggsins is:-

I dont necessarily want to jabber semantics since that is an unfortunate eventual common staple of all music discussion forums and leads to forum decay.
Some people just join forums to bitch - not learn (or themselves offer wisdom.)

But Im interested why you dont see Faust as being progressive.
They were "progressive" as all heck back in the day. Opening up new territories and all that. They totally did NOT compromise.

Are you one of those that only sees prog as having to do with only symphonic?
You dont accept things like R.I.O. and Kraut as being progressive? Fair enough. We all have our own mind-set boundaries, but some of us prefer to pidgeonhole to a lesser degree. You can be damn sure when these artists were origionally making these musics that the last thing they thought was "am I true to the ideal of making pure so-and-so genre music?"

Kraut more often than not tends towards aggression and (cosmic) chaos/disharmony and some see progrock as being the opposite - sheer melodic Romanticism.
If your one of those, well good enough. But I urge you to look into it a bit deeper - prog CAN be harsh.(For instance, King Crimson is prog, right? Well, whats the difference between Kraut aggression and say "Red"?)

Baggmaster doesnt like to go overboard with severe delineation. Sometimes its very difficult to parse out the distinct place where pop becomes rock, where rock becomes prog and prog becomes, say fusion.
In the personal collection for instance, Baggs lumps it all together - avantprog, fusion, artrock, symphonic, psych, proto, har d (and heavy),neoprog, popsike. And Im pretty sure you do as well.

I only separate folk, classical and electronica from the above.

When it comes to Magritte, Im surprized Gumbys have not yet brought up the Styx coverart.

(But then again Gumbys are just that.)

Howard the Duck 04-19-2011 10:31 PM

then ELf and Rainbow is "prog" innit?

Phantom Limb 04-19-2011 10:44 PM

This one is pretty crazy.

Thats one horrid cd. (I found it in the public library a few months back and gave a listen.)

As to the coverart, I submit a worthy title to the cd would have been:
"What manner of vagina did THAT pop out of?"

Baggs, I think your presence on the boards reflects poorly on the little that remains of a prog community here. If you're gonna treat everything like a contest between you and everyone else here instead of trying to integrate into the community, then I suggest you go do it to the guys at progarchives.com instead. Noone here's interested in a proggier-than-thou competition as it's generally something only morons would engage in.
