Lame.

You're right about DSOTM being too smooth for its own good. I got my period of DSOTM binging, but after a while I play it, get nostalgic, then sick after 5 minutes. It's like a candy that is a bit too sweet.

or too perfect. It lacks that organic quality that I associate with Pink Floyd. i think Obscured by Clouds blows it away personally.

I don't have any problems with the slick production of DSOTM and later releases. I agree that it lacks the organic quality of earlier Floyd, but it represents another stage in the evolution of the band, mainly where they became masters of studio craft. I recall you saying it was the beginning of the end and I found that to be a really ridiculous statement because the only previous Floyd albums that can compete with DSOTM and the 3 albums that followed are Piper and Meddle.

That's interesting. I don't really associate an organic quality with Pink Floyd. I always tended to like their cold songs and albums the most.

Why is it ridiculous? The Floyd began as a free form concert band after all. Studio craft is not the be all and end all. If they began this way then DSOTM is the pinnacle but they were completely different to this starting out and I love their organic approach to music which was lost on DSTOM. Doesn't mean my views are right but then it means neither are yours.

The band love the album and have said so but they also said that there was nowhere to go after this album so I regard it indifferently.

Yeah, by the same logic you could call OK Computer the beginning of the end for Radiohead because their music became less organic and more "cold" but for some bands that approach just works better.

Just because a band changes over the years isn't a bad thing, I know Pink Floyd started out as a certain kind of band but it would have gotten redundant if they remained that way for the rest of their career.

I mean imagine if Flaming Lips never evolved from an average punk band or if Genesis never evolved from a mediocre Zombies clone or if David Bowie never evolved from writing music hall novelty songs, just because an artist was originally about one thing doesn't mean they can't change. What makes all these artists so enduring is the fact that they have evolved a lot.

My first Pink Floyd song was "Welcome to the Machine". Meddle was the first album of theirs I fell in love with, though.
