Klaatu: surely the cream of all Prog

You heard me.

Klaatu is not bad, but certainly not the cream of all prog. You're entitled to your opinion though.

Jymbot 05-03-2011 06:22 PM

Klaatu is the height of prog, period.

So they maintain at Hoffman music forum.

Dont dare claim otherwise.

Thats just the way it is.

Accept.

From where, exactly?

You seem familiar.

I'd call myself quite the Klaatu fan.
Is this the only thread on MB about them? I can't find anteing else

I think Klaatu is an acquired taste

Does anyone remember the hype that they were actually the reunited Beatles? It was a great marketing move as I fell for it as a naïve teenager. Turned out to be a great album though.

They turn up on MB, but usually just as an item in somebody's list of prog bands or something. So this seems to be the only dedicated thread to Klaatu, and I have to say that it is far from informative. :(
Elsewhere on MB, I found this post, which tells us more about Klaatu than Jymbot could be bothered to tell us :-

19. Klaatu - Hope (1977)

Most people know the Moody Blues album Days Of Future Passed where Rock music fuses with classical. Klaatu goes even further to create a whole new sound combining both genres. Hope is a concept album about an advanced ancient civilization that destroys itself. Klaatu was recording this album right around the time that there were rumours about Klaatu being secretly the Beatles. This rumour both helped and hindered them. Their first album 3:47 EST gets most of the attention but this album pulls you along on a journey.

My own 5 cents? As I recall, I found them to be a bit too slow and uninspiring, but by all means convince me otherwise, Mucha/rubbersoul ;)

This song, though, had the honour of being covered by The Carpenters of all people. Nice title and hook line:-

I had three albums from Klaatu, 3:47 EST, Hope, and Sir Army Suit. No, if you're looking for Cheap Trick or something, these guys aren't it.

But I found them quite melodic, influenced by McCartney in the best way, really. (In other words more like For No One than, say, Silly Love Songs). Hope, in fact, I found as something of a pleasant surprise, especially this track.

They tailed a little on Sir Army Suit and I don't know much about them afterwards. Still love these guys though.
