Country Joe and the Fish

I`ve never seen this band mentioned on this forum but for anybody that doesn`t know them, they were one of the early pioneers of the San Francisco psychedelic movement in the 60s and were fronted up by "Country Joe" McDonald and Barry "The Fish" Melton. Their first two albums Electric Music for the Mind and Body and I-Feel-Like-I`m-Fixin-to-Die still blow me away and they usually make any essential psychedelic 60s list. But these albums are more than just psychedelic albums with their huge amount of eclectic sounds and impressive atmospherics and can really evoke feelings. The group also appeared in the legendary Woodstock festival, but are probably best remembered as being a Vietnam War protest band. It would be interesting to see, what some of the older American members of this forum think about this band.

i don't much about them besides Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die (song)

Country Joe did produce a feminist album by an all-girl group that was way ahead of its time, though (the name escapes me at the moment)

Listen to the first two albums, also I couldn`t find anything about Country Joe producing an all girl feminist group, but it would seem just the type of project he would be into though.

I've actually been listening to some of these guys recently. They're pretty awesome and put on quiet a performance at Woodstock.

Electric Music for the Mind and Body is excellent, unfortunately I do not own anything else.

There other albums were decent, but never captured the magic of the first two.

Howard the Duck 02-17-2012 09:01 AM

i still cannot locate that issue with the feminist band he produced

Electric music for the body and mind is one of the best psychedelic albums ever. When you see country Joe perform his famous folky Vietnam protest song, it kinda surprises you to know that hes the same guy from electric music for the body and mind.
