Favourite Genesis albums?
 

As it's hard to just pick one, you can pick the ones you like best and I guess that will rank them accordingly. Be interesting to see how Gabriel v Collins shapes up, or even prog Genesis v pop Genesis...

I'm only including the studio albums here, by the way.

Invisible Touch!

It's the boooomb.

Track Listing:
1.) Invisible Touch- Perfect intro song, nice and upbeat and sets the tone for the whole album of a pop masterpiece.

2.) Tonight, Tonight, Tonight- The best song with the same word in it three times (excluding "the'), nice work by Collins here on the drums.

3.) Land of Confusion- Nice little song here to catch your breath after the two juggernauts before it

4.) In Too Deep- Best song on the album with a memorable hook that will last a lifetime

5.) Anything She Does- Starts of the B Side just like the first side does with an uptempo poppy perfection.

6.) Domino- A 10+ minute journey into a noise jungle

7.) Throwing it All Away- Another classic joint here, I remember hearing this as a kid and still get the chills.

8.) The Brazilian- The weakest track on the album but nonetheless still a nice little ditty

Short, sweet and a pop masterpiece. Peter Gabriel is sweet solo-wise but I'm very close to this album and not a huge prog fan so it is no surprise that I would say this album and not "Selling England by the Pound"

In fact, I'm going to go listen to Invisible Touch on my drive home from work.

Personally, as I've said before, I'd rate "Invisible touch" just above "Abacab" (just!) and possibly "Calling all stations", but other than that it falls far, far short of what Genesis were capable of, and what I expected from them. For me, this album was the beginning of their slide into mediocrity, and I don't care what "American psycho" has to say about it: this was the album that sounded the first peals of the death knell of this amazing band.

I think they rallied to a degree with "We can't dance", but it was less a resurgence and more a last gasp before the end. Then we got "Calling all stations". End of discussion, really.

But fair play to you if you like "Invisible touch": I just doubt many others will be voting for it. I hope.

After some consideration, right now for me it's The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.

It does feature the most edgy Gabriel era performances ("In the Cage" being one of the best known). and the cover is also a classic. I was going to vote for Foxtrot again mainly for "Supper's Ready," but even after going through the classic Selling England by the Pound (which I introduced a friend to and changed his opinion on Genesis after years of only hearing the Post-Gabriel stuff), it's still right down to the epic.


I'm going to have to check out "Domino" once more. I avoided Invisible Touch for the obvious reasons, but the epics are always their trump card.

Still, even if I have not heard that album, there's still some morbid curiosity to hear it. A dollar used CD find and some time to waste...

Also, CAS is not a terrible album (I have it) but a) it's really hard to get used to someone other than Collins or Gabriel singing and b) the bad or at least mediocre tracks outweigh the few good ones (Alien afternoon, Shipwrecked and the title track: particularly that, as it sets you up for a real fall, being a great opener and then the album mostly just slips into mediocrity. Die with whimper, not a bang...)

I'm kind of a "One Favorite" type of guy, as if I chose more than one, my post would be certainly epic and I would seriously take a long time.

Right now, in very short form, it's:

A Trick of the Tail (Finally decided on my one true favorite Collins album)

(PS - as it does not include Live albums, I would have said Seconds Out for my favorite Collins, but onward...)

and then the rest, although I still need to hear CAS for my final; judgement in this list.

Genesis - some of the album rock tracks are great, better than most of the singles, and "Taking It All Too Hard" is an underrated single.

Invisible Touch - "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight" is really good, "Land of Confusion" is a very well-written, catchy call for social change, and most of the other singles are good.

Abacab - "Keep It Dark" is very musically interesting, and the three hits are solid.

We Can't Dance - "No Son of Mine" is a terrific song, and "Never a Time" and "Hold on My Heart" are solid adult contemporary.

Duke - "Turn It on Again" is a good one, and "Misunderstanding" is haunting.

So many good choices!

It is hard to compare the pop Genesis to the prog Genesis, as they both have their merits.

Personally, Selling England By The Pound is my favorite album, followed by The Lamb, and then ...and then there were three.
