"Discoveries" in Prog Rock

We've all from time to time stumbled across that prog band that few/no-one has heard of, and thought why the hell haven't I heard of these guys before? This is one of mine, band from Canada called Mystery, who feature current Yes vocalist Benoit David in their ranks. This is their bio on progarchives.com

And this is a track from their album "One among the living". They have a new one out this year, have it but have yet to listen to it. Expect a review soon!

Two years ago (around this time of year come to think), I was going through a pretty heavy progressive rock phase. One of the albums I picked up was actually from that year by a band called Hypnos 69, who did a wonderful job of recreating the sound of '70's prog, while sounding like a new band, rather than a cover band, or going the Porcupine Tree route.

I seem to run across interesting proggy bands all the time, but since last year or so I've found so much great stuff from out of Poland in particular...such as this little project known as Moonrise. Fans of Camel and the Floyd....take notice.

Seven Steps To The Green Door - The ? Book.

A seven piece from Germany that seems to have each band member into a different sound and then melding it together. You have 70's prog, Metal, death growls, Folk harmonies, Electronic ambience and yet it is still very coherent and easy on the ear.

Frost* - Milliontown

A little too reliant on keyboards in parts for me but full of atmosphere and enough songwriting skill to change it up now and again.

Oceansize.

I really don't know too much about this band other than this song is fantastic. Reminds me of bands like Cog and Karnivool.

Delayed by Älgarnas Trädgård has been one of my recent obsessions. These are the opening and closing tracks off the album.

Kicking a bit of life back into this old thread, this is a band I just discovered who have been going since 2008 and already have three albums. This is their third, and if you like your prog in the early Marillion style, with a big helping of Pendragon and some Big Big Train in there too, well, you could do a lot worse!

Nine Stones Close --- One eye on the sunrise (2012)

It's a bit of a cliche, but a truism nonetheless than every track on this is excellent, and had I heard it before compiling my top twenty albums of 2012, "One eye on the sunrise" would definitely have been in it. Here are just the first three tracks for you to sample, and a link in case you want to buy it.

The road to Avalon --- The Minstrel's Ghost (2012)

"The Minstrel's Ghost" is a sort of band/project name under which multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and singer Blake Carpenter works. This is his second album, and it has been twelve years (yeah) in the making. It's based on the Arthurian legend --- not an original theme I'll grant you but he does it well --- and the thing that strikes me most about this guy is how gentle his voice is. This is not to say it's not strong, because it is, and he sings really impressively, but his singing is just so warm and so unforced and so, well, nice, that it's a joy to hear.

He manages to sidestep some of the pitfalls inherent in an undertaking of this kind, and really every track is a gem, although to be totally fair sometimes his lyrics are a little simplistic --- "Through the mist/ There comes a man/ Takes the sword / In his hand" (Excalibur) or "Over land and over sea/ Can you beiev in what you see/ This is where we want to be/ Living life in harmony/ Every beast and every tree/ Living in an odyssey..." (Avalon, part 1 --- the songs themselves are great and the music is top-notch. If you're looking for blistering guitar solos or meandering keyboard passages that go on forever, look elsewhere. This is proper prog rock music.

Add to that the amazing art involved in the project and you have an album you really must check out. If I had to compare TMG to any other artiste or album, it would be Ken Kiernan and Ger McDonald's "Erinsaga", but you don't know what this is, so let me just say this is pretty special and definitely worth a listen. I've cobbled together what YTs I can below. Check out the art one for sure...

It is also the most recognized Lithuanian band abroad." - Info from their site, but i don't know anything about them till last year. Their new album "Colours of the Desert" is brilliant
