Psychlub 6: "Under Wartime Conditions" - The Cleaners From Venus

Selected by Briks.

There haven't been many reviews lately; would you folks like to switch to a "question" system as in Wpnfire's electronica album club?

Thelonious Monkey 11-28-2014 03:47 PM

I would like to leave. Sorry for being a dick, but I have come to the conclusion that Psych ain't for me. I also have Metal Mania coming up, and I won't have time.

Kinda figured you'd want to, after Metal Mania was announced. Glad you gave it a shot.

If you think it might generate more reviews, I'm all for it. I plan on continuing to contribute to the reviews either way.

I haven't seen the electronica club questions but I like the idea. Might focus me a bit.

Pet_Sounds 11-29-2014 03:26 PM

Alright then, we'll give it a shot. You don't have to use the question form if you just want to write a review.

And here they are, slightly adapted from Wpnfire's. We'll probably discover that they need further tweaking, but here's a start.

What were your impressions of this album after the first five minutes?

Did those first impressions change as you listened to the album?

Were the opening 2-3 tracks or the closing 2-3 tracks stronger?

Did you find you enjoyed this album more or less on repeated listens?

What was your favourite track?

What was your least favourite track?

What did you think of the variety of tracks presented?

How would you describe the overall mood?

Would you listen to it again for purposes other than this club?

How well do you know this band/artist?

If you're familiar with this band/artist, how does this album compare to their other work?

How would you improve this album?

Would you recommend this album to a friend?

Will you be exploring this band/artists' other material?

What did you think of the vocals?

What did you think of the instrumentation?

What did you think of the production?

Any other thoughts to share?

Rate the album out of ten. No decimals!

Aight, gonna give it another listen, and then I'll answer the questions.

Alright, so I'm not answering all of the questions, because I roll my own way.

What were your impressions of this album after the first five minutes?
"Wait, this doesn't sound like Midnight Cleaners. Welp, it's good anyway."

Did those first impressions change as you listened to the album?
Not really.

What was your favourite track?
I think it's "Lukewarm Love Song".

What was your least favourite track?
"Hand of Stone" doesn't do much for me, but it's not a bad song or anything.

How would you describe the overall mood?
Really, really British.

Would you listen to it again for purposes other than this club?
Sure, it's a good album.

How well do you know this band/artist?
Heh, I'm the one who suggested them, so I do know them a little bit. I'd heard their album called Midnight Cleaners, and I was eager to hear more.

If you're familiar with this band/artist, how does this album compare to their other work?
Well, I think I prefer Midnight Cleaners and its jangly sound, but this is pretty good as well.

How would you improve this album?
Moar jangle.

Would you recommend this album to a friend?
I don't know, maybe? I've already recommended songs from Midnight Cleaners.

Will you be exploring this band/artists' other material?
Hell yeah.

What did you think of the vocals?
I wouldn't call Mr. Martin Newell an "exquisitely talented singer", but they fit the music.

What did you think of the production?
I think the lo-fi production is really charming.

Rate the album out of ten. No decimals!
7/10

I demand full credit for bringing this band to everyone's attention :D
I liked this album a lot, but to echo Bricks' sentiment, it's just dwarfed by the brilliance of Midnight Cleaners.
