Pink Floyd - 1965 Their First Recordings

I was wondering what everyone thinks of this? For those who don't know it's a release of Pink Floyd recordings from 1965, 2 years before their debut album (Piper at the Gates of Dawn). It was released last year on a limited run of 1000 LPs that were snapped up immediately. Scalpers started reselling them straight away, you can now get one for about $600 if you are so inclined, but there are plenty of digital rips floating around the internet. I was Pink Floyd obsessed in my teen years to the point that I can barely go back to them now, however I still love their first two albums, and for this reason I was pretty intrigued by this release.

My verdict: to be honest I was a bit disappointed - I think I was expecting too much, that the tracks would feel like lost tracks of Piper at the Gates of Dawn. On the whole they sound more like a garage version of the early Rolling Stones, with only small hints of the band they would soon become. The last track, Butterfly, gives us a hint of the adventurousness and chromaticism that would characterise much of their late 60s music.

Overall if you haven't heard it yet don't expect some great lost Floyd release on par with what would come after, but from a historical point of view it is fascinating.

Funny you posted this two minutes before I posted a question about The Nile Song.

I'll have to check it out if I can find it. I was pretty Floyd obsessed myself years ago. They were probably the first artists I got into where I wanted to have every album.

Looking now. So far only found previews, but it sounds good. I love garage and I love early floyd. Syd Barrett had such a magical mind.
